Pomade vs. Brylcreem vs. Hair Tonic

Which would give hair good hold, but also the shiniest look?

I haven't tried tonic, but my impression is that tonic is more for scent than hold. I tried brylcreem and it has some slick, but insufficient hold for my hair. Murray's Superior has plenty o' hold, but comes with its own set of "issues."

Probably a good pomade like Dapper Man, DAX, or Layright. Depends on your hair type. Those with coarse, wavy and hard to control hair seem to like Brylcreem. Doesn't work so well for me as I have medium textured hair that just goes completely limp under the stuff. Hair tonics are mostly just alcohol and mineral oil which can be irritating to some.

Just cut your hair short, or shave it all off.

Try this. When you wash your hair, towel dry, give it a dab of Brylcreem or hair dressing, and brush it while it is still damp. Do not blow dry. The dampness will soon dry by itself. Doing this helps train the hair. You should soon find it stays under control. If not you may need to wear it a little longer.

I've been a pomade guy for about a year now, maybe i will try brylcreem soon. Will give that plenty off hold?? I have a huge fro if i don't use something like pomade..

When I still had my hair, I liked Suave over Brylcreem....Dunno if you can get Suave anymore...

Try softer pomade. The orange Murrays doesn't give much of a shine. They have a light blue can with very soft pomade too. You can also mix both...one for the hold (don't use too much) and the soft one for the shine.

I use black and white pomade. It's medium and just right for my thick hair. The orange Murrays doesn't work for me at all.

First of all, you need to determine what you're trying to get your hair to do. Bottom line, one dressing is going to work differently than another.

Patent leather hair (that won't move) - Murray's Superior Pomade
Shiny and firm, still pliable - Murray's Super Light
Shiny, the "wet" look with only a little hold - Murray's Hair-Glo, Brylcreem, Vitalis
Matte finish, firm hold - Water based gels, the cheaper the better
Matte finish, firm but pliable - Groom&Clean

Trying to do a pompadour? Murray's superior. Want to keep a part in your hair all day, but don't want to have super stiff hair? Murray's Super Light. Just want the wet look? Brylcreem.

Trying to get Murray's out of your hair and you've run out of industrial degreaser and blowtorch fuel? Use Groom&Clean for 24hrs.

As I aged and was obviously NOT going to give up on hat wearing, I had a heart ot heart with my barber.

He advised a short cut, and I have never been sorry.

My hats look better, my hair is easier to take care of and I can towel dry, toss on my hat dujour and run
