I just got this Panama hat in Planter (or Gambler ?) style.

The brim is 10cm and there is a pencil curl .

I like it but my wife thinks it is maybe a bit on the " imposant " side with its brim being 10cm

Hats serve multiple purposes. They have utility and they are also a fashion item. For what purpose did you buy this hat? It is important to know the 'Why' of the purchase. If you bought it to protect from the sun then it is the perfect choice. If it is a fashion purchase and you are most comfortable in a hat of more modest proportions then yes, perhaps it is too large for you. There is NO such thing as an 'objective' standard concerning hats. It is your hat, your choice, your decision.

The why is because I love hats and even though it may have a little eccentric look I embrace it.

I have to say on the pictures from the site where I've bought it , the brim didn't look as big.

I have had in the past a Planter/Gambler by Jaxon and it was also large brimmed buit not quite as much as this.

That hat was very nice and although it wasn't women with as soft and light toquilla as this , it wore nicely. Unfortunately it broke beyond repair during a Holliday.

So my intention was to replace it.

The sun would be certainly kept away and I'd acquire a " fazendero " look ;)

I think it looks very fine, but might look out of place unless worn on a sunny day or outdoors in the summer months. I would definitely wear it in the summer, it's a very handsome hat and well proportioned.

So wear it or don't wear it. Your choice. There is no standard in hatting as to what looks good, or what is acceptable. Wear it or don't.

Keep this one for sunny days and buy another with more modest proportions for the other days.

I’m not sure what makes you think it’s. “Eccentric”.

It is a very good looking hat, and will serve its purpose well as a sunshade.

Enjoy wearing it and stop overthinking.

I wear all my hats, or anything else, really, with conviction .

I have worn the hat yesterday on a not very sunny day (The Fall has arrived in the NL) and I was stopped y a gentleman who felt he had to share his admiration for the hat. Which, in all honesty means that this thing may be seen as " over the top" (nice pun!) by some, hence the need to make a comment on it. It's alright with me.

I have been wearing in te past ( and I still do) large winter hats anymore pertinently to eccentricity , a very nice Boater (which now resided in the US at a fellow member 's house) and a bowler . Which in the NL are , at this point in time, rather eccentric headgear and if you wear one you are not likely to find another person wearing it.

So, I don't take particular notice of what others may , negatively, think.

However , sometimes, one can overestimate certain things and , yes you can wear anything you like , but there a fine line defining what is fitting your natural look and what is not.

This hat, I am convinced, fits me but I am also convinced it wouldn't fit everyone in any circumstance.

I was looking at this issue a while back. I tend towards a 3" / 75mm or so brim as a default, but I was looking at a new Akubra for a warm climate felt / bush hat sort of thing. Eventually, I figured this... The extra inch is noticeable for those of us who are hat people, but to the average person on the street it's not... and when you see it being worn, it's a non-issue, especially when you're keeping off the Sun. I'd say it has more of a Western than a Fedora type vibe - if we were a regular cowboy hat wearers, we'd probably not have questioned it at all. Your hat in the photos looks great - not too wide at all.
