Like Sam, I had a modern Stetson Stratoliner from Hatco that did that after a few rain drops. The hat wasn't completely soaked but was just hit with a few drops. I steamed it and gave it a good brushing and it helped a little but was still noticeable. Since the felt swelled only where the drops landed I think maybe it might not have been so noticeable if the entire hat had been wet. I thought about completely misting the hat with distilled water but never got around to it.

I wouldn't do that if I were you and I would keep it out of the rain. That weird pilling can only get worse. That felt just wasn't felted tight enough or allowed to settle enough before it was made into a hat. Then again it could just be the fur quality they started with. Whatever the case, use in sun and not rain.

No casechopper, its a deadstock Panizza. I will try brushing it after my brush arrives and see if it helps. Perhaps i will impregnate it, because i really want to wear it in the rain.

It's a beauty. My wife and I will be visiting New Mexico over the winter holidays. Perhaps we should consider a trip out to Tucson as well.

During last weeks tragic Colorado flooding we were in Colorado on a fishing trip. Though we were south west of the flooding we had our fair share of rain daily. I had taken my Lion Brand fedora and grew concerned about its durability in the daily drenching. I needn't have worried as it showed non the worse for wear

Fedora lounge - great work on a topic I thought I alone was secretly obsessed by - getting out in torrential weather to see how my Akubra's would deal with it! They of course handle it with ease, even though on first wear of my mid brown Camp Draft, some colour did leak, in really really heavy rain.
With summer knocking on our door here in OZ , it's now more about big brims and finding shade. Living in a hip suburb, I look a bit odd wearing my golden Spur.. But I'm bringing cowboy hats back. Long live the rain.
