I don't know how modern that 'rule' is. I can certainly remember my father telling me that the bottom button should always be left undone, that was at some point in the late 1970s.

Oddly enough, the 'undo the bottom button' thing sprung to mind yesterday when I saw a guy out walking with only the bottom button on his two-button jacket done up. In all honesty, the thing was already pretty boxy, and I have no idea of his physique, but the way it hung open made it look as if he was carrying a water melon underneath the jacket. Not good.
