Hamilton Carson, c. 1935/36 so I have now both versions of this model (this one and the one with black enemal numerals).

Just a little watch info,the Hamilton 401 movement that was used in there Byrd model,Livingstone,and I believe Stanley,was possibly the finest watch movement made,the were right up there with any "Swiss" ie Patek,V&C,Breguet, etc movements.I would take a Hamilton "Byrd" model (very hard to come by) over any Patek!!!!

do these count? They are my great grandmothers watch case, her husbands watch, and their sons watch if I understand their history correctly (the silver cased watch that was my grandfathers I had restored a few years ago, and regrettably carried for a while. now it needs service again, and my local watch maker is gone to whatever ticking place in heaven that is reserved for such great men):

Both wrist watches are from the '30's. The pocket watch is dated 1902.

I've been wearing my Pops 1949 Eternamatic since he passed recently. He stopped wearing it when he retired and about a year back I gave it a cursory cleaning and got it running. It keeps good time too. When I get a little coin in my pocket I'll get it a proper cleaning & timing by a reputable watch smith. It's a real joy to listen to it tick again. It was something that was comforting when things were quiet and I was close to my Pop as a kid. Like I said, he stopped wearing it when he retired because Western Electric gabe him a Casio digital watch. It was a great multi function watch but I like this one better. Because he bought it over in Germany when stationed over there from 1951 to 1954. The serial number dates it to late 1949. The elastic band is not original to the watch but I have that one too and was thinking of getting it repaired. May not be worth it though. This one though is the one I remember from childhood, so I think I leave things well enough alone.

You can date the Elgin watches by entering the serial number on the back of the MOVEMENT in the Elgin database at http://www.midwestcs.com/elgin/databases/elgin_sn_intro.html

Bulova used a code. After 1948 the movements were labeled with a letter and number as shown at http://thewatchguy.homestead.com/pages/BulovaSerial.html

Earlier they used symbols as shown at http://www.manleyhorlogerie.com/Watch_History/bulova.htm The symbols were reused, so you have to get close from case style or movement grade.

We can also date other American brands from serial numbers, but most Swiss watches are very difficult to date.

Both were my mothers. The first one is at least 30 years old and she gave it to me when I graduated junior high in 84'....

She bought this next one around 27 years ago and gave it to me when she bought herself the Rolex with polka dot diamonds on the bezel....

They classify as vintage don't they?

I'll be giving my daughter the top one on her graduation from high school, but for now I switch them back and forth
