Don't know a lot about the brand. Keeps time well. Love the "lollypop" second hand. Does have small radium "dots" around the dial marking every five minutes/seconds. Do not wear often so do not keep up with the day numerator....

Helbros is a brand I remember growing up. Started in the early 1900s, it was bought by Elgin in the mid 60s. It produced quality watches until the 1970s when accurate and inexpensive quartz watches from Japan forced it out of business. Today its quality pieces are becoming collector's items. The iconic Mickey Mouse watch is one of those, along with Helbros non novelty and quality watches.

Tudor Pelagos, I’ve had it for probably 6 years and it is still in fairly heavy rotation. Just a solid, comfortable watch, easily one of my favorites.

This is by far my favorite and most worn watch until today.

I don’t know much about Vaer, but is there a specific style or complication you’re looking for on a watch? Price range etc? There’s lots of great options out there from Microbrands to all the major ones too.

Thanks for your reply. I had been looking for a field watch with the following characteristics for a few months:

- 40mm or more in size, max of 43mm
- saphire crystal
- screw down crown
- mechanical/automatic
- black face and black case, with a very strong lume
- durable, scratch resistant PVD case
- easy to read numbers with date
- 20mm standard lug size for easy future strap replacements

The Vaer A5 hit on all of them.

There's a few Timex pieces that fit several of these requirements at about 1/2 the price, but Timex and their resellers are sold out of them and the company doesn't even know when/if they are restocking them.

As for the other majors, Hamilton is very over-priced IMO for their product, and IWC, a brand I've long coveted, is MASSIVELY overpriced, so finding Vaer was, like many product finds I've had lately - an amazing stroke of good luck.

I'm a leather jacket guy not a watch one, so I sat through a ton of videos on youtube and read many review articles comparing Vaer to many other brands, and it stood out for its quality and high level product features. For those on a tight budget, you can get the same watch I did with a quartz battery mechanism for under $200, an absolute steal.

I'll do a review of the A5 when it comes in the mail in a few days.

Honestly it seems like you’ve already answered your own question. It appears Vaer is using Miyota movements which are pretty reliable. Everything else seems to check all your requirements, so if you’re happy with it buy it. For the price it seems like a solid entry level mechanical watch.

I would also suggest ( if you haven’t already done so) you look at Seiko’s. Their entry level mechanical watches are absolute tanks.
