I was sifting through youtube last night and this video landed in my recommendations. I am posting it because the creator shows how much work and steps are needed over 3-4 months to tan and treat the hides that will eventually become the leather jackets we love.
Far more work than I think I'd be willing or able to do myself, but it gives a sense of how involved the process is that the tanneries, which are really science experiments / chemical laboratories, go through to make the amazing leathers we have today. That these procedures have been perfected over thousands of years is also quite interesting.
