Obama white tie

OK, you convinced me. The dude is definitely cool no matter what he does.
I did sort of want to see him in a full white tie outfit, tho. I expect that will happen.

I think that Michelle Obama really has a Jackie-O vibe with her clothing throughout the campaign which is awesome, but more casual and modern.

But damn, a fedora would be AWESOME

The presidential dinner jacket died after Reagan. Obama's white tie with regular tux might be 'forward thinking' but so was the 1970s jumpsuit. But, at least he didn't wear cowboy boots...

I won't comment greatly on Michelle, but I think she has an odd body shape that is difficult to dress classically.

I give them points for trying. Unlike most of the other politicians we saw today.

I seriously think her fashion sense is very underrated though. It may not be *my* style, but that doesn't mean it's not good or that I can't appreciate it.

I agree, her style isnt mine, but I can see why people would appreciate it.

Shes pear shaped, like most women in the world, but what I find refreshing in her wardrobe choices is she seems to be astonishingly unapologetic about it.

I loved the First Lady's daytime outfit. tasteful, elegant, simple, but fashionable. And I like her shape.
Her evening gown was lovely, and I am really, most pleased that most of what the "experts" predicted was wrong. What I read predicted no beading, safe, etc. Dopes.
I like that the President's choices were not ordinary. I'm not sure exactly how I would have had him dress otherwise, unless it were a tailcoat. But there's still value in some traditions (I already see Baron Kurtz warming to his rebuttal), and white tie with a dinner jacket is usually not the correct combination. And a notched lapel dinner jacket, to me says "rented for a wedding."
He should have either gone with DB/peaks with the white tie, or a black tie with the jacket he chose.
BUT I applaud his not being boring! We've had a string of presidents who have been very safe, vanilla, standard, blank canvas. Blah. What he wore tells me he's not afraid to be his own man, do what he feels is right. Go him.

The President's tie did not work for me. It should have been black. White was just... odd, like a short cut to formality somehow, but without the tails. It was jarring, but not awful. He is tall and confident enough to pull it off, but just barely.

It may have been an effort to coordinate with the First Lady's, in my opinion, hideous and dumpy single shoulder prom dress. The waist was entirely too high making her look thick in the middle and oddly proportioned.

I am not entirely sure why the presidential look seems to equate to a first year-out business school grad's interview suit? The last president with any sort of individuality was Reagan, who single-handily brought back the brown suit.

I was rather hoping President Obama would be different. I would have been happier if he had swapped suits with Tom Hanks.

The waist wasnt too high on the First Lady's dress, its the bulk of all the gathered fabric. With all that going on at the bottom, a simpler bodice would have been more complimentary, also the designer should have nixed the one shoulder deal.

My first thought on seeing the First Lady's ball gown was that she'd reworked an old chennile bedspread -- I was hoping for something sleeker, which she could have carried off beautifully. And yes, strapless would have been *much* better.

The daysuit was very sharp -- there were audible "oohs" and "ahhs" from the theatre crowd when she came on screen. We don't see too many yellow outfits up here in January, and it was like a burst of spring.

I kept wondering who cut the tails off the President's tailcoat -- pity, too, because he'd look extremely impressive in the full soup-and-fish.

Believe me. MONTHS of research, drawings, mock-ups, choices and meetings went into the clothes those two wore yesterday, in addition to the many such meetings connected to running the country.
They didn't exactly pull those things out of the closet Monday night.

My favorite outfit of late was the buff and black outfit she wore to the "We Are One" concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday.

I didn't like Michelle's gold outfit much at first but it really grew on me. The texture of the lace was an especially nice touch, as was the tie closure of the coat.

I agree with Lady Day that the white dress would have looked better if she'd worn her hair up but I thought they both looked great last night.

My explanation to a coworker here at the office was that she was using the same method as the Queen of England. The big hat was just to make sure that people 3 1/2 miles away by the Lincoln Memorial could see her.
BTW, I saw the ceremonies on a co-workers laptop, using a wireless connection and accessing the live stream of CNN and the NY Times. How many people used this up to date, not at all vintage, method of witnessing the events?
One more BTW: Watching this reminded me of what a wonderful experience it is to visit our nation's capitol. If you've never been there, try to do it some day. It's just a wonderful, and very rewarding and inspiring place to visit.
