I've got a pic of my deco era and ragtime pianist friend Frederick Hodges, taken at the Art Deco Yosemite weekend in March that with his blonde short hair looks an awful lot like this fella... too funny.

Stopped in the town of Wytheville, VA for lunch yesterday. Wandered around a little bit, and spotted this old rusty barber shop sign. Went down the side street to get pictures of it, found that it was open and there were no customers. So I went in. The barber, still in the traditional white smock, asked what I wanted. I explained that I was into the whole '30s/'40s thing, and that that's how I wanted it. He responded, "so just a normal haircut, then", and set to work, working almost entirely with the electric clippers. He worked without the length attachments on the clippers, and only used the comb to hold the hair away from my head, not as a guide. Great haircut, neat experience, and only $6.

I got something close to a high and tight...a one on the sides and back and trim on the top...my top would rate about a 4-5 right now to the point of where curls can be seen just slightly. I'll get pics soon.

I've spent a good bit of time in Virginia and am always delighted to find these kind of places. My home state of Texas is being "gentrified" to the point that places like the barbershop in Wytheville are harder and harder to come across, even on the backroads.

Sad but true. There's hardly any barber shops out here that do good old fashioned haircuts. There's a few in D/FW, but they're far between.

Valentino Hair

Hello, my first post. My hair would be very curly if I didn't use pomade. I use Murray's original for hold and hair glo for shine. Usually my hair gets very straight once I get a haircut, but recently even after a 1/2 inch cut my hair gets curly on the front and sides. I'd prefer straight hair. When I try to make an off-center part like Rudolph Valentino my hair ****s up and starts becoming uncontrollably curly, with messy bits of hair popping up, making it look too layered and making it look like I don't care and don't comb. But ****y hair looks good with a sleek 50s side part and I don't mind some curls with a 50s style, but thin bits of hair still pop up and my uncontrollable cowlick really annoys me; and even by using huge glops of the heaviest pomade can't control my cowlick! It is strange that using pomade has made my hair ****ier and though it has controlled my curls and added shine, it hasn't been performing my full expectations. Maybe it's my type of pomade or even hair product (should I use brylcream?). Until my problem is solved, I'll stick with a Mad Men/50s-style. Any suggestions to achieve perfect "Rudolph Valentino" hair with curly hair?

Depending on the coarseness and thickness of your hair, perhaps you should investigate some of the products designed for people of color. In almost every hair-care section is one dedicated set of shelves for african-american hair types.

I have a good white, white, white friend who has VERY, VERY coarse, THICK, curly hair and he has had good results using some of those products. I don't remember which, but they worked to "smooth" him out.

How about an all natural product with no petroleum products in it at all! Something that washes out with water and gives a nice shine, I'm talking about a hair treatment called "Dapper Man" and I have some if you'd like to try it out. It may work for you, it works for me great but, then again I have very thin straight hair.

The Valentino look is very classy but, if your finding that even if you're a huge fan of Valentino's style but your hair isn't, then maybe try another classic Hollywood actor's style who had wavy or curly hair! In the early 30s waves were all the rage!

PS: I have always believed that ghettos were color blind. There are poor people of every color the world over.

The name sounds good! I'll look it up and try it out! Never knew waves were the rage in the 30s, good to know. I seem to opt for the greasy, petroleum-based, non-washable pomades, the real classic stuff. But if Dapper Man gives a good shine (that's what I want, does it have good hold?), then I might use it! Thanks for the help!

P.S. Yes, that's true. Never tried to be racist or say the ghetto was "all blacks".

frankly IMO, if you dont do it the old way, youll never truly get "the look", but thats just me. washing my hair consists of running water through it MAYBE once a month. i dont put stuff in my hair but once a week, but when i do its a mix of petroleum, shea butter and coconut oil.

change the pillow case once a day and bobs your uncle.

You wash your hair once a month?! I put a towel over my pillow to keep the goop off it. Although when I looked up "Dapper Man" it had a very 30s art deco packaging and claimed it was based on a formula invented in the 30s. I can't bring myself to believe that mainly because it wasn't petroleum-based!
