On Hat Tuesday #13 at 11am EST today, I will be showcasing my second Stetson Derby, a beautifully aged piece from the 1930’s with a unique New England lineage. This particular derby was made in Boston for the iconic department store Jordan Marsh Co., giving it that unmistakable blend of regional character and vintage American craftsmanship. But here is what makes this episode especially interesting: this derby has a small paint stain — the kind of imperfection that sparks real conversations among collectors and hat lovers. Should I remove it? Leave it as-is? Restore it? Or embrace it as part of the hat’s journey? During the livestream, I will break down the options and invite viewers to weigh in.

Hello all, I am certainly enjoying myself here in London. Had a great time with Paul John Murphy and Ian Read yesterday, especially when we ended our hat shop tour at Lock & Co. We even made some new friends. One of them is Jools (pictured with us below), who goes by "zeropositive1" on Instagram. Make sure you give him a follow if you want to see some great outfits. Since I am on travel and experiencing spotty WIFI signals, the Fedora Friday #15 livestream will be pushed back to next week. Also, I am traveling back home on Tuesday so Hat Tuesday #16 will be pushed back by a week as well. Hope you all understand. In the meantime ... stay hatting, my friend!

Fedora Friday #15 steps into the 1980's as we break down the hats of Krush Groove (1985), the film that captured hip-hop at the exact moment it crossed from the street to the screen. From Kangol bucket hats to the emerging fedora silhouettes that would soon define RUN-DMC, Krush Groove is a visual time capsule. These hats were not costumes. They were statements of identity, authority, and cultural transition. You can see the shift happening in real time as hip-hop style begins to crystallize into iconography.

Today at 2 PM EST, we step into a world where determination mattered more than polish. Before the bell rang and the world took notice, Rocky (1976) captured the grit, heart, and quiet dignity of working-class Philadelphia. In this episode, we explore the often overlooked style that help ground the film in realism. Part of this movie magic was everyday headwear that defined the streets, gyms, and corners of a city fighting for respect. These hats are not about flash. They are about character, humility, and perseverance. This timeless style reflects the blue-collar spirit that made Rocky an enduring American classic.

For a timely and important episode of Hat Tuesday #18, we take an honest look at the lack of clear standards in modern hat making. For hatters, collectors, and enthusiasts alike, this conversation goes to the heart of quality, transparency, and trust. What do terms like “beaver,” “custom,” or “handmade” truly mean today? How do we distinguish genuine craftsmanship from clever marketing? And why does the absence of shared standards matter for the future of the trade? This episode is not about gatekeeping. It is about education, accountability, and respect for the craft. If you care about how hats are made, how they are represented, and how the craft can be protected and strengthened, this discussion is essential viewing.

Might I suggest you do a review of the hats from Season 4 of the Australian TV series Underbelly. The season is set in the 1920-30s in Australia. Lots of cool hats, both men's and womens.
Thank you for the recommendation, I will check it out. I have not done any tv shows yet but I plan to do one for "Boardwalk Empire", "Peaky Blinders", and Season 3 of the "Tulsa King:,

Today at 1pm EST, Fedora Friday #19 dives into the hats and fashion of "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968)—a film where every outfit is a carefully calculated statement. Steve McQueen defines modern masculinity with his iconic style, combining elegance with subtle dominance. This is crime as performance, and fashion is the tool that communicates power without words. We explore how hats and clothing reveal character, intellect, and strategy, while creating some of the most influential fashion moments in cinema history.
