Personally, I look forward to seeing a on screen version of Cobra Commander. I just hope they can find someone who sounds like Chris Latta, rest his soul.

Some writers are turning in multiple drafts of the same script with variations in scenes and endings in order to cover a project's potential demands.

Paramount in fact has asked for three different scripts from three different writers for "G.I. Joe," and will perhaps combine the best parts from each one. Those involved in the novel tri-partite draft effort are Stuart Beattie ("30 Days of Night"), John Lee Hancock ("The Alamo") and the writing team of Brian Koppelman and David Levien ("The Winter of Frankie Machine").

This is going to be another one of those dorky puppet movies that will last in everyone's minds about 10 minutes.

As an incoming Marine you learn of stuff like the Guadalcanal debacle that proved the **** were NOT invincible. I've since been amazed at the exploits of Paige and his groups as I've studied the battle.

But I digress. Bottom line is did this business about G.I Joe forever remaining a American get put into a written contract?

Aside from the Paige association, there's the great Ernie Pyle movie, "The Story of G.I. Joe". G.I. Joe IS the American infantryman. He's John Q. Public in uniform. That's like trying to make Uncle Sam a generic international character.
Crazy.

Keep in mind that there have been many faces on the toy.
And the classic toy of the `60s & `70s has almost nothing to do w/ the later toys of the 80s&90s.

For that matter, the toy of the `70s was impacted by the mood of the VietNam years. It was sold as part of the Adventure Team , not a combat soldier.

And, look at how Thunderbirds was turned into a movie w/o any puppets!
But in the same year, The SouthPark boys did a raunchy parody actually using the marrionette style to great effect.

Message to G.I Joe Fans
Hasbro’s G.I. Joe Team wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts regarding the G.I. Joe live-action movie that we are developing with Paramount Pictures.

First and foremost, we are not changing what the G.I. Joe brand is about. The name “G.I. Joe” will always be synonymous with bravery and heroism.

The G.I. Joe brand has enjoyed a successful 43-year history, spanning two key generations. The first was the line of 12-inch “realistic military” figures that were popular with kids in the 1960s and 1970s.

The second generation, was created in 1982, and is based on a cast of fictional heroes and villains that make up the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” fantasy. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their “fight for freedom wherever there is trouble” against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series.

This movie will be a modern telling of the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pit” as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm. Without all of you, the brand would not be where it is today.

I guess this process of internationalisation has been going on for a long time. [huh] We had Action Man here for years on end - he was never Anerican, though AFAIK he was the UK equivalent of GI Joe - sold by Palitoy, later Kenner. Definitely a solider in many guises (I remember a whole range of WW2 uniforms in the early 80s, including loads of Wehrmacht variants in full regalia), though also a fireman, sailor, adverturer, etc etc. Associated with that was Action Force - early on, they were sold as "mini" Action Man - a version the size of a Star Wars figure that the costume couldn't be changed on. That went through several reworkings, until the Action Force vs Cobra version of the mid 80s, which was always an international thing here. It was later rebranded GI Joe, but with the same content.

It seems to me that they are likely to face a backlash over this in the US (Fox News are certainly intent on whipping it up from what I've seen), though maybe that's a generational thing if what they're donig reflects what kids who grew up in the 80s are familiar with, and they are going to be the target audience, really. Internationally, including here in the UK, I would have expected a pan-global team to be something that would sell much better, not so much due to the present international climate, but simply because the kind of ***g-ho US patriotism that sells well to an American market simply doesn't have the same resonances here. At least though in this case it wouldn't lead to the usual debates about taking liberties with history.

I don't understand why there is such a hullabloo about this content now when there wasn't 20 years ago when this incarnation of GI Joe came out. Can someone explain that part to me? Or is it just the current political climate in the world today?
