Gable vs. Bogart

I have to say that Gable lost some of my appreciation when I learned about his part aboard the Liberty Lily.

Stiil and all, while I would never say ANYTHING negative about Bogie, I'd have to give the nod to Gable.

Since he was born in 1899 that means he was 42 years old in 1941. I have seen some of his movies from the thirties and see little or nothing of what made him a star. For some reason he became a much better actor when he passed 40 years of age.

I do know he respected professionalism in an actor. Someone who came prepared and did his best could count on his support. His talent was largely a matter of hard work and slow development. I admire that.

So, I guess I count as a fan. Like his movies better than Gable's. But Gable was the bigger star in the thirties.

Once again I wish my mother were still around: She was a young woman when Gable and Bogart were active. I know she said Gable was her favorite, but I don't know if she was representative of girls her age.

The two actors aren't really comparable, as actors. It's not as if they could switch roles. Imagine Gable as Duke Mantee in "Petrified Forest," or Bogart as Fletcher Christian! Nope!

But -- speaking from a guy's perspective, of course -- Gable aged better than Bogart.

Generally I like Warner Brothers movies best of all the Golden Era flicks, and Bogart was their standby and star. Given a choice between two classic films I haven't seen, one a Gable flick and the other a Bogart, I'll probably watch the Bogart first.

I know that I can watch Bogart way more easily than I can watch Gable. That is my judging criterion.

To look at Clark Gable without a doubt but I tend to like Humphrey Bogart's movies a lot more. I even named my family dog Bogart. So hopefully that gives my opinion.

Carole Lombard certainly seemed like she was more easy going than Lauren Bacall. Bogie and Bacall were perfect together, though. Couldn't picture them with anyone else. And I'll bet Bogie wouldn't have cheated on Bacall with Lana Turner, as Gable was alleged to have done, which supposedly spurred Lombard to take that fateful plane trip in 1942, in order to get home sooner when she got wind of that little affair.

Back to the original question in the thread: I never saw the appeal of Gable - in looks or acting ability - so I'm a Bogie fan all the way.

My thoughts exactly. I never saw Gable as that great an actor.

Bogart was awesome in the movies he did. Wish he would have lived longer.
