I've got a small collection of zippo's that I use. I do notice a small aftertaste when lighting a pipe though.

For pipes, I would recommend an Austrian Imco trench style lighter. Most of them have a core that you can pull out for ease in lighting things like pipes and campfires. They have been around since the WWI era and new ones can be had on Ebay or elsewhere for cheap. They are pretty much windproof as well, and the flint is easy to access for changes. I use a Zippo on my cigars and do not get an after taste. Every butane lighter I have tried broke.

I use Zippos because I have a problem refilling those butane jobs. I put more butane on my fingers than in my lighter. Zippos are cool anyways I have one I found at work 30 years ago and still have it. I broke it years ago doing the old 50s tough guy routine. I snapped the lid off opening it. Someone told me they fix them for free if you send them in. I went to a smoke shop and sure as shoot they gave me a little envelope. Sent it in and got it back complete with new inners ! No charge so I am a Zippo man for life. I just used it to spark up a Bauza tonight.

Ive got a pretty big collection of zippos ranging from 1950s ones to modern knockoffs with cool styles, in total Ive got about 50 or so, 20 are actual zippos.
My two favorites are my dads old pipe zippo from the 60s, that he got as a kid.
The other is always on me and i got it from my sister n her husband as a 17th birthday present along with a pack of marb. reds and a western shirt a few years back (got to love siblings haha). Its got my initials engraved on it... it was my brother in law's father's back in the 50s.

I use zippos or matches for my cigarettes. When I don't have matches and get tired of refilling a zippo I'll use a bic lighter. Right now I have a brass zippo that I have squirelled away somewhere. Or maybe it's not brass, it just needs polished. I have a standard zippo that I bought a while back along with a Zippo Blu that is fueled by butane.

When it comes to cigars I'm a matches man all the way, but then again I dont smoke many cigars. My best friends dad is a member of one of those cigar clubs and he gave me a couple boxes of cigars last year.

I buy cheap gas station cigars every now and again when I'm out of smokes and broke.

I have a Zippo that I got while I was serving in RVN. It is inscribed with my unit and the date, 1968, on one side and has my name and rank at the time and the unit crest on the other side. I haven't carried it for years but I think I'll get it out and try it again.

I get mine from JR Cigars. The JR Alternatives are a great value in a good handmade cigar. They are sold in cellophane wraped bundles instead of boxes and have a eneric "JR" band but they smoke like the expensive sticks.

I love Zippos (and that fuel taste) for cigarettes, especially in public. But when it comes to cigars, I have to use butane.

I've only got a couple of zippos right now, but would like to start a bit more of a collection.

I grew up in Bradford. Zippos and case's were the main stay of boy scouts all over McKean County.

They aren't doing so well though. Just laid off another 80 and there aren't alot of people left working there. I dont know how Case is doing at the moment though.

I just ordered one from that website for use with pipe smoking.

Places like SportsmanGuide and CheaperThanDirt have them for as little as $5 a piece (for the Super Triplex), but I decided the extra cost would help support a small business.

The IMCO lighters look a heckuva lot more interesting that Zippos (no adjustable windscreen or removable core). Will post more when I receive it.


*EDIT*

Well with campus mail being what it is, I received my IMCO lighter tonight around 10:00, which is ridiculously quick, considering it was sent first class with only a day or two of actual transit.

Anyway, the mechanism is deliciously simple and (appears to be) effective. Can't try it out, though as it arrived quicker than I could get my hands on lighter fluid.

Again, will post more when I get it working.

I read through most of it at Barnes & Noble a few weeks ago. It was really interesting. I figured I'd just glance through it, but ending up reading a good chunk of it. There's a lot of fascinating stories and trivia in it, but I forget any specific instances. Sorry if this review is lame...

A little more on the IMCO Super Triplex lighter...

After a few weeks of use, I love it.

The removable core is very useful for lighting a pipe (for the charring light). The ignition system is also quite reliable and fun to use. Only thing is that it goes through flint and wick kind of quickly (might just be that I mess with it all the time). For relighting a pipe, though, I found it easier to just invert the lighter with the windscreen open (it prevents any charing of the pipe).

my first zippo was from frisco and it had a a little trolly design on it...i eventually scratched it off and spray-painted it flat black...then i lost it...

now i have a brushed zippo 'vintage', meaning it is a new zippo with the old design from the 30s or whatever...and a matte black zippo 'slim' that is tiny compared to a full size...it's actually pretty neat...plus i got a 12oz(i think) can of zippo fluid so i shouldn't be running out anytime soon...

I've got one Zippo made in 1961 (according to the date code dots) that is very handy for cigars. My pipes are lit with matches.

I have returned one for service and received it back repaired quite promptly. The torches are excellent for lighting cigars, and I presume would work well for pipes as well.

Finally broke down and bought a zippo.

I bought this on eBay:



It was advertised as a zippo style lighter made during WWII by a company called Century.

It appears to be made out of steel like the war time zippos, but the "spring" mechanism is completely different. It also lacks any sort of markings.
