Just to double check, you are surprised that your entry level budget jacket isn't as nice as your Horween horsehide Aero jackets?
It would be like a Dacia Duster not being up to the same quality as a Mercedes G Wagon.

The pricing doesn't look bad. I have been hesitant to buy from some of these brands such as brake house which are in the 40-600 dollars range especially if its horsehide leather. Please share some photos once you get it. I am curious about the quality of the leather and attention to detail.
I have been looking at getting this custom made, https://www.fivestarleather.us/coll...0s-grizzly-jacket-chl-2mm-thick-leather-brown. For 20 dollars they offer custom sizing which is not bad.

Honestly that sounds like a disaster. CHL leather is not a good jacketing material according to the information in this thread.
For Brakehouse, the leather used in the Real Simons jackets is of much higher quality.

I haven't read this thread as I dislike Five Star jackets enough to have given mine away just so I'd be rid of it. Your comment about getting a custom made Five Star rings true as there's a strong likelihood that whatever you get from will feel like it was custom made.

The downside is that it'll feel like it was custom made for someone other than you.

YMMV... my experience was from a single jacket which for me was more than enough.

Hi I was considering getting a kinda custom jacket - using the Brandy Brown 1930 Half Belt as the base and just switching out the lining getting a custom size then just adding a 3 inch internal leather hem along the bottom of the jacket and a 2 inch internal leather hem along the cuff , having a diamond armpit gusset , then have brass zips along the exterior ;pockets and have an internal leather welted pocket - any thoughts on my requests and any opinions on the brandy brown horsehide / the base half belt jacket. Thanks

These members that are talking about having used 5* and had it turn out well generally know their stuff and may have an inside track of some kind. If you don't know 5* and are considering a custom jacket from them based exclusively on price know that hope is a poor strategy. My recommendation would be to consider getting a root canal instead.

I appreciate the advice , i was kinda like researching jackets and i thought the alterations would be cool , but i am kinda fine with the jacket as is and since i don't really have any formal experience in garment drawing or anything it may make the most sense to only really have the zip up external pockets which i doubt would require any real change

Wow haven’t read this thread in a while!

Seems as though 5star improved a bit? I see they are using a semi veg tanned leather now.

What is their best leather currently?

I don't think there are any new offerings since your last post in this thread.

Like @Harris HTM mentioned, the new 5* A-1 that's labeled as "premium capeskin" is actually a very nice quality, authentic capeskin. I believe that Shawn inspected an A-1 from a top manufacturer and sourced a hide that was a close match.

I've patched mine and replaced the buttons and it's a banger of a jacket. Especially when considering the cost. Nearly all of my reproduction military jackets are Good Wear and ELC, so I am definitely not out shilling for a sub-par piece.

Looks great
Got a question; do A1's tend to fit like leather MA-1's? Your jacket looks nice and I was thinking of making some modifications to that pattern that make it more like an ma-1.

No, an A-1 fits nothing like an MA-1. If you are interested in the A-1 pattern, but with an MA-1 height collar, check out the 37J1.

Headwind also offered an "Admiral" A-1 a while back that was essentially an A-1 with a 37J1 collar.

Im thinking about ordering a Cossack from 5 star, does anyone know if I should size up or down?

Also, does anyone understand what this means -the circled part?
Do they the jackets is 4-6 inches smaller than my normal chest size? And that I should size 4-6 inches for a more accurate fit?

That's the measurement of the jacket itself. If you have a 44 chest, the jacket has to be able to contain it. If the jacket also measured 44, it would not be able to fit you and whatever else you wear (tshirt, sweater), thus why they recommend to choose a size 4-6 inches bigger than your chest.

I don't know if you should size up but you're the one that's been asking for the Aero Aeromarine, right? After reading a lot of 5 Star in their dedicated thread (which has hundreds of pages), I don't think I'll ever go with them. Specially if you're aiming to get a cheaper Aeromarine, the chances of being disappointed with what you get are just too high IMO.

The measurements listed are the jackets dimensions. So….I am 5’11 215lbs and would need an XS in this pattern. This is all you should need to know to put a hard pass on what will inevitably be a complete waste of money.

@Peacoat @Edward - Maybe this could get merged into this thread? :)

That sizing chart in Inches simply has to be incorrect - Not even a standard-fit Aero Highwayman lists a 44" Pit to Pit for a "size 36" designated jacket.

And then, if you read through the ~ 456 pages of Five-Star jacket experiences from members on this form, what Tony indicated above is true - many, if not most people who ordered from them were not fully satisfied with the product, for various reasons. A few notable exceptions for sure. Overall, there are better choices (including pre-owned) if you can get the measurements to work.

What does the part in the bottom mean? Can someone translate? Im reading that I should measure my chest size and size up 4-6 inches?..

I think English is not their native language.
