So the pit to pit is smaller than the seller's guess at size... according to the written description anyway

Well from the pictures he's measuring the chest from the inside so his guesstimate is likely a tad off. At 19" inside that would be a 38 chest . A 36 chest should be ok with just a tee and sweater but not much else. His estimate of a 38 chest might be a tad off Its a pretty decent jacket for a smaller guy and if it was a size bigger and a bit longer I would be keen.
