The crowds celebrating the anniversary are unlikely to match the size or enthusiasm of those that gathered around breweries all over the country on "New Beer's Eve," April 6, 1933, in anticipation of the return of legal beer that actually had some alcohol in it

Together they fulfilled their first campaign promise with passage of the Cullen-Harrison Act, which increased the amount of alcohol allowed in beverages from 0.5 percent to a discernible 3.2 percent by weight.



Full-strength beer and hard liquor were still a few months away. National Prohibition wasn't repealed until the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on December 5.

Prohibition was repealed on 12/5/32 with Utah being the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment. Seattle immediately allowed sale of beer, wine & liquor. Washington state had ratified the amendment on 10/3/32 and already had laws in place awaiting ratification of the 21st amendment by the 36th state - the number required at that time for an amendment to pass. I'm not sure if it was the first city to allow sale of beer & wine, but after Utah's ratification that afternoon, the party got underway. At least one bar in town had a big party 12/5/08 to celebrate the 75th anniversary - there's another string here on the Lounge about that.

I suppose it just depends on when particular states or cities allowed the sale of alcohol. Los Angeles and other cities (undoubtedly NY, SF, Boston, Miami, etc.) had boats loaded with liquor just outside the territorial limits, ready and waiting to steam into port the minute prohibition was repealed.
