Yes they would damage the fabric. I read on Johonna Ost's blog she used clip on earrings for dress clips and the fabric was damage free.

I have tried earrings but sometimes the grip isn's as good and they can fall off, so beware!

Lol! Mine have sharp metal teeth...a bit pinchy! I didn't know what they were until a few months ago when someone on the forum did a post on dress clips...I felt 'real swell' for thinking they were earrings!
