Double Helix G1 sleeve creases

Hi All,

I’ve recently purchased a custom made Double Helix G1 black core oiled wax horse leather jacket. It arrived on Tuesday this week.

I think the jacket is amazing and fits me really well.

Nonetheless, I do have a worry/concern. From the start, the left sleeve had some creasing while the right sleeve had no creasing at all and was smooth. During wear this week, the left sleeve creases became even more pronounced, while the leather on the right sleee somewhat remained smooth. Please see images for exactly what I mean.

My question is, as someone who is not very familiar with leather jackets, is this normal and am I worrying about nothing or is this a legit concern?

You're right, it looks like maybe some loose grain. I think it's a pretty poor choice from them to put that panel in such a place, on the shoulder. You don't really have anything to "worry about" though, except that it looks like this.

Thank you for the reply. At this price point, is it reasonable to raise this issue with Double Helix? It’s custom made, so I guess nong-refundable.

You can raise it.

It‘s mismatched for sure in the sense that they chose a much more grainy hide for the sleeve. I am always hesitant about using “loose grain” as some imply a structurally defective hide with that term.

Personally, I don’t mind mismatched grain on leather pieces. I have had that on both jackets and boots and never had any qualitative impacts. It’s part of the natural element of dealing with leather.

That said, although I personally would be happy with the jacket (proper fit provided), panel selection is no rocket science for a maker at the level (and price) of DH, so feel free to reach out, should you be dissatisfied.

lol that’s completely normal. When I first got my brand-new Mister Freedom Ringo leather jacket, the left sleeve’s grains were much more prominent than the right sleeve’s. I thought about complaining with the store, but I’m glad I didn’t (I’d sound like a complete noob and complaining about nothing). Now I’ve grown to love grains and come to appreciate mismatched panels.

For those deep in the leather jacket game, grains = good and smooth = boring, lack of character.

Just a swag, but do you wear a wristwatch on same arm as the most-creased sleeve? Possibly watch forces woven cuff upwards a bit, which might also force sleeve upwards a bit.

Personally, and given the vagaries of leather itself (as mentioned above), I would not be concerned.

Yes, I do wear a watch, but my watch is so thin the cuff goes over it. The thing is, the jacket is no more than a week old and looking at pictures from the day I received it, I can spot these “creases”.

To be honest, if everyone says it’s okay then I’m fine with it, that’s why I am looking at getting opinions. Thank you for the reply also.

Here’s a picture also from the day I got it. You can definitely see some creasing on that sleeve.

Yes, I do understand loose grain as meaning some sort of “defunct” from searching the internet. That’s why I got concerned when Codex said it. To me it doesn’t need to be perfect as it’s still a natural product and I’m totally fine if it’s normal.

The jacket fits you perfectly. It looks cool. Wear a jacket with pleasure.

Personally I would raise the issue. There is desirable grain and then there is undesirable grain. This is clearly the latter. It's bad clicking. This looks like a low quality leather panel used in a spot it doesn't belong in.

Edit: I agree with others though that the jacket looks great on you.

Thank you! It’s a really great jacket despite the “concern” I have. The craftsmanship is amazing really and it’s the coolest and most beuatiful jacket I’ve ever had. I am really impressed with the overall quality. Note that I am aware that my concern is maybe caused also by me not having prior experience with horsehide jackets.

I once had a steerhide jacket where one of the chest panels had similar grain and I really didn’t like it.

In part, I didn’t like it because the other side of the chest was incredibly smooth and I didn’t like the contrast. But I also found the raised sections of grain very unattractive, kind of like varicose veins.

No, you’re right to address this issue. All I can say is that it’s not a structurally defective hide, but it IS a visual issue, and only you can tell if it diminishes the fun for you.

You see pro and con voices here, so either way you’d be in good company.

But man, it does look great on you! I dare say, once broken in, one hardly would notice anything off at all.

When you order, did you get a confirmation and a receipt? I just ordered a jacket from them and I did not receive any confirmation or any receipt.
