I'm very tempted to pick up a pair of Old Town's Orfords in tan drill and was wanting to know whether anyone here has a pair and if so their thoughts on them.

I have a pair of 1970s Lee bags that have 28" bottoms.

I also have a pair of Old Town Orfords. They are OK but I wouldn't describe them as particlarly baggy - certainly not 'Oxford Bags'.

I've produced a prototype pair of similar trousers (but more with more of a US influence) from recycled WW2 cotton duck material. The pattern is fairly simple. Any competent pattern cutter and/or machinist could do a pair.

I actually don't want them hugely baggy so the Orfords look like what I'm after.

What's the circumference on the Orfords by the way, around 20"?

Mine measure 19 1/2 inches in size 30 inch waist. They may have shrunk slightly.

I visited the Old Town HQ in Holt, Norfolk a coupla years ago and was very impressed by the quality of their work. I was tempted by a pair of Dreadnought trousers but (surprisingly, for such a 'generously' cut trew) they were 'says size 36, measures exactly 36' kinda deal. I think that 'work' trews look best slightly too big around the waist and gathered in with a belt...

I bought a deadstock pair of '60s Lee carpenter jeans off Ebay for around $10 – the denim collectors aren't fussed cos they're not selvedge/selvage – and they're nice, dark, lightweight denim – like a heavier chambray. Union Made, too! Lee have reissued these and Aero have got 'em for around £30 in their denim sale section...

I've also got a pair of Pointer Brand 'fisher stripe' denim carpenter jeans, which are a nice alternative – they should be available at most western/farm supply stores or from here: www.pointerbrand.com
