Do I have to take the shirt to the cleaners to get out lipstick?

Found this on a homekeeping site--hope this helps you somewhat!
(We dames can be such trouble sometimes, huh? )

Lipstick is a dye in an oily base. Therefore, a solvent based remover is the only type that will remove it. Water based or wet spotters will only spread and set the stain.

• Rub in vegetable or mineral oil onto the affected areas and allow it to soak for 15 minutes.
• Blot excess oils with an absorbent paper towel or terry cloth rags.
• Then sponge in a solution of 50% ammonia with water (unless the fabric is silk or wool).
• Rinse thoroughly with cool water and wring out.
• Sponge remaining affected areas liberally with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.
• Apply laundry pre treat and launder washables in hot water.
• HOWEVER, a little lipstick contains a lot of dye in even a small particle. A VALUABLE PIECE OF ADVICE is to take your laundry to a professional with a stain removal expert at your local Laundromat or dry cleaners.

Now here's one for you -- How on earth do you get ink (from roller ball pens) out of fabric? I forgot to check the pockets in my boyfriend's flight suit before I washed it and now I have blue AND red stains all over my formerly pristine white pillowcases...not to mention my lucky shirt. Flight suit was beyond repair, but I am still holding out hope for the other two articles. A friend suggested spraying the stains with aerosol hairspray and scrubbing them before a second wash. I know that often works with grease stains..but ink?

I've used hairspray to remove ink from white dress shirts. I have also used a dry cleaner. Once I found a good dry cleaner, I discovered that they can get almost anything out of fabric even thick axel grease!

As evidenced by VintageJess, pay the money and take it to a cleaners. All that soaking and stuff is moire trouble than just dumping it on someone else. A good cleaners can have it fixed the next day. :eusa_clap

I think I'll give the hairspray a shot, as it's much less expensive than paying a cleaner to do it...if it doesn't work, I suppose I'll have to dye my shirt and the pillowcase violet.

Just be careful that you do not set the stain by drying it in a dryer or in intense heat of some other kind. Once that happens you can forget about ever getting it out. I would rather blame the cleaners.

Well, could be worse. Once while skydiving I was forced to do a downwind landing (the guy landing in front of me just wouldn't get out of the way!), and I skidded about 20 yards on my **** before coming to a stop in the neighboring beanfield. I never did get those grass and mud stains out of the seat of my flightsuit!

Well, how do you like that. HE leaves the pens in the suit, which ruin MY linens AND my lucky shirt, and I get the credit! I believe he is perfectly capable of washing his own clothes, and if he's too negligent to check his pockets before he throws things into the laundry...on his own head be it. Actually, he was appropriately contrite re: the stains on my things, and I did apologize about the suit, though it wasn't really my fault. Who leaves PENS in their clothes, anyway?

Ok, I confess. I have left pens in the laundry. Fortunately, my pens usually have caps on them and nothing gets out of the pen but it still isn't impossible. Add to the list of left in the wash things:
checks
notes
money (paper and coinage)
mints eek: terrible to get out)
pocketknives
lighters
and probably a host of other things I don't remember. The drycleaner loves me.

Isn't that just like a guy to focus on the flightsuit! We're all alike, us guys. *hanging my head* You're absolutely right; it definately does not fall to you to check the pockets. I, too, confess to leaving a few things in my pockets from time to time. I once accidently mixed one of those red shop rags in with a load of towels and stained everything in the load pink! Hoo, boy, did I catch it for that one!

My pride was more sore than anything else. It was my first time on a faster chute, and I had a lot more speed than I thought.

I did not, however, get any lipstick on my collar! (Just to stay on topic) Matt, that's just a cliche! You should have introduced this topic with some MK-like narrative:

What about toothpaste? I remember one morning while brushing my teeth I dirrbbled a bit and got it all over one of my lapels. I took the blazer to the dry cleaner but the stain is still set in! Even though its faded, it's still somewhat visible. What do I do to get that out?

Also, I have a small grease spot on my nice linen pants from the wheel of a suitcase. Would I use the same stuff to get that out that I would lipstick?
