I was watching Casablanca on TCM last night, and I noticed a line that I never picked up on before, during the Paris flashback. It's when the Germany's WWII-era leaderships are cutting closer, and Rick, Ilsa, and Sam are in that bar drinking champagne, and Rick and Ilsa are making plans to take a train out of Paris. Sam says something like, "They'll be looking for you," and Rick replies, "I left a note, they'll know where to find me."

What does he mean by that? I know he was a *** runner, and for unknown reasons, he can't return to America. Was he being sarcastic? Or cocky, like, "Yeah, I'd like to see them try to get me."

Any thoughts?
