I'm not actually wearing the cap today, though. *It's the new Henry the Hatter 8/4 linen cap I bought for this summer.

Just saw, in a Burlington for the first time, "Bill Robinson" brand sets of pre-tied, patterned bows and solid color pocket squares ($9.99). The square is a color found in the tie-- about half the examples were white.
They do have that "pre-tied look" and the knot looks like it could be a separate band wrapped around and stitched. Not sure about that. (If you unstitched, would you have a tie you could tie yourself, or would you just have odd pieces?)

A lot of them would leave you with pieces, I fear. If you can't untie it there and then by hand, I wouldn't risk it. FWIW, I have two Hilditch and Key bows, both proper, self-tie bows but which have a detachable hook in the back. I suppose this allows a compromise for those who need to tie it round their leg then clip it into place. Could be the best of both worlds, I suppose. I'd rather they were one-piece, but they came in the sale and I really like how they look when on.... As a general rule, though, I'd never risk buying a tie that needed unstitched to untie, as I suspect it'd be a rare thing indeed you end up with an actual bow tie rather than a bunch of odd bits of fabric once done.

This week's Bow Tie Friday number features a floral design with leaves and stems combination, which, when blended with the artfully so-very-nearly almost well tied appearance, says, "Ah, Friday, Friday, Friday~"

I try to once a week or so as I don't have a job where I can dress up. So basically, its be just going about daily activities with a bow tie.

I just acquired a plain dark red one like in IRN's collection. A Ben Sherman from Nordstrom Rack.
It's the most or second most I've paid for a tie, so it's a bit odd that it would be a solid. But the first bow I ever had was from the formal Dept.... "Chinese Red" some would call it. And I've only worn it twice (it's just too circus-y.)

I would love to wear a bow tie but I can't get the hang of tying them! I have tried and tried watched videos looked at pics. I just can't get it down yet, but not going to give up...

It is actually REALLY easy to tie a bowtie, now that I've done it. The problem with a LOT of videos on youtube, is that they show you how to tie it from the wrong viewpoint. Instead of facing the MIRROR like any normal person would, the guy's always facing the camera, so you get the backwards view of what you'd see ordinarily, and that screws things up no end.

You tie one like this:

1. Pop your collar up. Put the tie over your shoulders and around your collar. Keep both sides equal length. They should reach to your sternum or around the bottom of your chest. If they don't for whatever reason, the tie's too long/too short. Adjust as necessary.

2. Pull the right side about 1 inch lower than the left. The tail of the left tie should be in the middle of the right tie.

3. Place right tie over left tie, loop under, and pull tight. Leave right tie sleeping on your shoulder while you deal with the left tie.

4. Fold the head of your left fishy in half, widthwise. Twist the tie to the left, so that you've got a bowtie shape under your chin.

5. Drop right tie over the front of your left tie.

6. Pinch folded head and tail of your left tie together with fingers. Pull firmly, away from the body.

7. Fold the head of your right fishy, widthwise.

**There should be a little hole (just big enough for your finger) in the tie-knot, after you've pulled the left fishy away, in step six**

8. Stuff right fishy into this hole, folded-end first, until you've reached the middle of the tie.

**Smooth out and straighten any wrinkles or creases, specifically in the front of the tie, and on the folded, right fish-head**

Now, you should have:

Front: Left folded, right free.
Back: Left free, right folded.

Pull on fish-heads to tighten tie, fish-tails to loosen. Repeat as necessary until awesome tie-knot is achieved.

Done!

Interesting. He seems to do what I do except the last step is backwards.

The first time I starting wearing bow ties, it took forever to tie it; it seemed like the blood drained from my arms it took so long. But eventually I got better at it. It does seem that the bow tie can be can be impossible to tie, but perseverance will pay off.

A guy dropped into the thrift-shop today with his girlfriend. He was looking for a bowtie for a costume. We had one tie in stock that hadn't sold in months. I picked it out of the tie-tub for him and he said he'd take it.

I asked him if he knew how to tie a bowtie. When he said 'No', I gave him a five-minute crash-course in how to tie one. I hope he remembers the steps!
