Best knots for side laces on motorcycle jacket?

Hello all,

I recently bought a motorcylcle jacket from JL (will post some pics soon). This jacket has side gussets, allowing the hem to be adjusted by leather side laces. This is my first jacket with side laces, and I am struggling a bit with the best way to wear the laces. The laces that came with the jacket are quite long (about 43 inches), and a result there are roughly 10 inches of lace hanging down past the knots which I use to tie the laces. This is far too long so I intend to cut the lace.

My question: what is the most functional/aesthetic way to tie the laces together? I want the knot to stay knotted, but I also want it to be as unobtrusive as possible. I would ideally like a knot at the base of the gusset, plus 3 -4 inches of trailing lace. I want the laces to hang straight down, and not to splay out to the sides. Any thoughts on which knot is best?

There are several previous threads on side laces, but none of them recommend a specific knot or way of wearing the laces:

I've attached a pic showing my current knot, which to me is inelegant. Would be great if folks could post a few pics of the knots they are using.

Don't cut them too short, incase you gain weight, they may end up being too short if you want to adjust the waist..

Honestly, I never cared much for aesthetics, I would use whatever knots, mostly some sailors knot because they're reliable and easy to open when need be. Look up and try some of these.

What JL did you get and from which leather?

Some of this discussion depends on the fabric/material used in the side threading--securing knots being a separate item, and easily adjustable knots a different category altogether. IMHO, it is perfectly acceptable to use modern USGI synthetic cordage of similar color to substitute for unobtanium original cordage.
