I'll Lock Up

I love the Mombasa. Seriously the way I pick up old hats the price doesn't seem all that outrageous to get something spectacular.

Now that's fine straw or whatever. That's a thing of beauty & worlds away from the Shantung Panama.

I canceled my 2nd Shantung Panama. Looking at it for a few hours the flat weave just looked so thin I could imagine hearing it crack in the seams.

Looking to learn about the better straw & weaves. Nothing like coming here & getting an education.

I have started to be able to see the difference in the common Shantung Panama.

Really need some good straw in the hot California weather where is can be 100 for weeks.

Two Shantung Panama. I know it's a better coated paper but the fiber looks different & so does the weave & they are both the same grade. The one on the right looks finer even though it has spacing. I imagine that would be cooler.
One on left maybe more flexible but looks like it would crack more easily & right might keep it shape better.

If anyone would like to help me over this hurdle I'd appreciate it.

I think you're exaggerating the risk in your head, TBH. I have a shantung OR that is my go to travel hat. It did actually fly off my head once and smack (crown first) on the pavement, no worse for the wear. I've stashed it (diagonally on the brim) next to my plane window seat, it was fine.

I'd be way more worried about cracking a natural straw.

With temperatures of 100 I would only consider semi-calado hats. Both of those look like they would just hold in the heat.

I picked up this Roy Rogers Stetson recently at a thrift store for $5 and was looking for advice on cleaning it when someone reached out and told me I should look further into into it's history, especially due to the tag under the sweatband. His thoughts were that it could have possibly been used in some type of Roy Rogers production. Can anyone provide any info or thoughts on this hat? Either way I love look of the hat, especially the crown.

I believe There is a video somewhere of Roy showing how he makes this crease in a brand new hat.

The Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Museum which opened in 1967 in CA was moved to Branson, MO in 2003 by their son Dusty. It closed for good at the end of 2009. Dusty consigned some of the museum collection to Christie’s, NY & the rest was sold at auction in Branson. My guess is your hat came from that Branson auction. Roy probably had several hats for appearances, parades, etc. I don’t know of any way to verify the history of an individual hat. The RR2 looks like it could be museum inventory but you would still need a COA from the museum to confirm as fact.

PS: ”Val” probably is Val McMenamin, Valentine The Hatter. He was sort of a hatter to the Stars. Roy probably ordered his hats thru him originally. Valentine hats are pretty rare today. @AbbaDatDeHat has one & I believe @BobHufford has one.
