I don't like the heavy grain myself, although they make look nice after a bit of wear..

Footballs are covered in steerhide, embossed with the pebble grain. They are called "pigskins" because in the days before vulcanized rubber, inflated sport balls were made from a pig's bladder, and possibly the pig's skin as well.
