I don't know what to think about him lately.[huh] Between him and Clint Eastwood. Who knows what goes through their heads?:eusa_doh:

I found the film highly entertaining, especially the bit of the "twist" ending. And I agree, all stories need embellishment for it to be interesting to watch, however it becomes problematic when it is a story that is representative of an entire culture. Even more so when the audience isn't well informed about said culture to begin with.

I have learned over the years to take everything I see/read with a grain of salt and to remain critical of it. I rarely just accept something as truth because I'm told to see it that way. Unfortunately, that's not how it is for most people, and that's why I see films like this, where the content is so far from the truth, to be problematic in the long run.

Looks like its gross @ box office is falling already. Maybe we USA DVD release & overseas grosses they may make small profit [huh]

I kept thinking it reminded me of a movie called "The Naked Prey" from 1966.

No kidding? Interesting. That movie is rarely mentioned.

As mentioned, there have recently been some excellent programs covering the Mayans and Aztecs with superb computer reconstructions of the cities and buildings. An hour is a rather compact amount of time to cover everything but makes for a sufficient chunk for the average viewer.

I've always been one that when my interest is piqued by a TV show or movie I hit the library and scour all I can. But i guess few do that anymore....[huh]

I do, what the heck[huh] most of the time Hollywood gets history wrong anyway. So watch the entertainment then learn the facts.

I think the matters of historical accuracy are only 'minor' if it's not your background.

It's only meant to be entertainment, but wouldn't it hurt me to research the man a little better than that before I portrayed him on the screen? Why offend millions of Americans (or Latino decsendants of Mayans) for the sake of a little care in research?

I haven't seen the film, but I would prefer a film grounded in fact,
not fiction, or political correctness. When Columbus landed in this
hemisphere the Aztec and Mayan civilizations existed and offered
compelling contrast with Europe, astir from darkness.

I bet it will make a killing on DVD (no pun intended).

Besides, it looks like it made it's money back with US ticket sales, which means most of the rest of the planet is gravy.

i FINALLY got a chance to see it.
I dont think that the holidays was a good time to debut this film. I had a hell of a time finding a theater that was still playing it.

And I loved it.

Interesting that Apocalypto, Letters from IwoJima & Children of Men all seem to be dealing w/ cultural extinction and the image of pregnant women in dilemma.

Apocalypto / Kings of the Sun

I finally got a chance to see Apocalypto and it brought to mind the old Yul Brynner film "Kings of the Sun" a somewhat cheesy but fun movie, would like to see a remake much like Apocalpto, which I thought was great, but whoa! all this happened in one day? I mean the guy escapes and saves wife and child?
It was great film none the less.
Mel Gibson is one strange dude what with Passions, the guy has something in "suffering" Haaa!

It reminded me of The Naked Prey w/Cornel Wilde.
Edit - I just read TNP is coming out in January on dvd.

I thought it was great entertaining film, Spaniards or Conquistadors killed indians in the name of Christianity, still I'd like to see a remake of Kings of the Sun.

The early 60's had many of these movies, when I was a kid I went for these types of films playing in theaters, it was a fun time period, well not exactly accurate story perhaps even cheesy, it was cool, and still it would have been awesome to remake it like Apocalypto. Check it out,
I hope it comes out some day in DVD.

Personally, I enjoyed Apocolypto very much. I realize some of it may be inaccurate, but I'm still happy with the results.

I enjoy Gibson films. I liked Braveheart, the Passion and this film. I guess it's a guilty pleasure.[huh]
