Ever read "Pulp Art" by Robert Lesser? Apparently, the art was so looked down upon that the publishers (literally) couldn't give the originals away. As a result, a very, VERY large percentage was thrown away or destroyed. Such a shame...

I'm curious, what exactly defines a piece or art as "pulp"?

These are the original paintings that adorned the covers of pulp magazines from the 20's through to the 50's. They are not considered fine art, as they ususally illustrate some lurid action scene or story from the issue. However, in recent years there has been some refinement about how people view the art and it's style, and it's worth and place in 20th century culture and pop-culture. Many view them as fore-runners of comic-book art. They were intentionally colorful and attention grabbing so that the news-stand peruser, while looking for something escapist and exciting to while away the hours and make them forget about the tough times they lived in, would be grabbed by the cover and seduced into buying the magazine over it's competitors.

... Whew!

Thanks for the tip. I love old magazine covers. Modern ones are so bland and clinical by comparison.
