I know that films set in the Golden Era are a main topic, but this film has always made me laugh, think, and feel, and that's what a film really should do.
Almost Famous is a film set in the 1970s, when bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, major events like the Vietnam War, The Civil Rights movement, and rebellion took place. But this film isn't about any of that.
It portrays a 1970s that I feel is much deeper. It deals with family, friends, trust, love, hate, ideals of the mid-1970s, and really ideals of every decade.

The film begins in early 1960s, with a mother having to deal with her rebellious daughter, and a young naive son that does what his mother tells him. The daughter leaves out of confused hatred and the mother lives on with her son under her wing. You can imagine the mother's feelings towards a daughter she can't understand.

Years later, the son is now in high school, writing for the school newspaper, underground magazines, and has now just been recruited into "Creem" magazine by one of it's writers. This is only the beginning of his adventure. His first assignment is to interview an up and coming band known as "Stillwater". He arrives at one of their concerts, and while being continuously rejected by the bouncer at the backstage door, "Stillwater" approaches him, and out of desperation, the young son compliments the band the best he can, and they welcome his words, and in they all go.

After that, the film basically follows this band, this young journalist, a young women with a fictional name, who claims herself to be a "BandAid", through their journeys as writer and subject, lover and user, mother and son, and eventually, friends. From the beginning, the writer who recruited this young journalist had said not to make friends with the band. Did he listion? No, and the turnout was much better than expected. The film fades out with a happy ending.

If you ever need a comforting film, one that leads you through a difficult everyday life of a young writer, and if you can look deeper into the story, rather than the period, I think you'll go for a nice ride. I always do, and I just watched it. :)
