Maybe...but I'm more inclined to think it's because they just wear whatever they think is "in" at the moment.

IMHO, in large part when it comes to what are for most people outside of the FL relatively minor details, most guys probably simply buy whatever style collar the fashion-retail places are full of at anyone time. I doubt most men really care about collar shape at all, plus unlike those of us who want to replicate acertain period aesthetic, they don't have any motivation for picking something other than what is widely available.

I find myself in agreeance with the Baron on this one... variety is nice. The thing that disappoints me at present is that it seems impossible (and I've looked all over town, including in places like the Savoy Tailor's guild - not only Next and Marksies!) in the UK to find a shirt selling off the peg with both double / French cuffs and a collar which is not the very widely spread collar. Shame that next is like this - their shirts are of a superb quality in my experience, and GBP22 for a quality cotton shirt really isn't bad. I suspect that this is symbiotically related to the fashion of recent years for wider ties with fist-sized knots... maybe if thinner ties were to make a comeback, we'd see a higher proportion of shirts with narrower spread collars.

I'm not saying I mind the wide spread especially - I hate fist-sized knots, but they look just fine with an ordinary four in hand tie (sometimes a tiny bit larger - I often have an extra wrap around to shorten the overall length of the tie. Modern ties are so damn long, and there's something repulsive to me about a tie that extends beyond 1" or so above the trosuer waist. The number of men I see with their ties hanging down round their crotches.... shudder). I just wish for some more variety. It does seem that the trend might be changing in the UK, judging from Paddy's recent thread on the Tesco shirts - Tesco are all about shifting units, so they wouldn't stock anything with other than full mainstream appeal / marketing intent.....

I'd love to see tie bars become more available again. The first time I saw one was on Australian soap opera Neighbours in the early-mid 80s - the chracter of Paul Robinson always wore them. I'd like to have three or four shirts that took those.

I intend to explore one of the far Eastern online shirt companies to see what they come up with - if one pilot order works out, I may well then try for a few more. I wish I could buy a variety off the peg at a sensible price, though.

Predictions...

...are problematic. Unfortunately, I see casual attire becoming increasingly acceptable regardless of occasion. Ties becoming less and less common until they are costumes. A higher grade of causal clothing becoming "dress clothing." Slide on shoes replacing tie on shoes for every occasion -- so on and so forth....

This is exactly why I am trying my hand at making shirt collars. I would like a French cuff with a point collar.
There are plenty of spreads to be found. Gimme some variety.
