What BK said RE that cool twill weave. Plus, just finding a complete three-piece from the 30s, in wearable size, that isn't totally trashed, is a bit noteworthy these days.

The fabrics great but the cut is just not there. At first glance, it does not say 30s.

I talked this over with someone else and well he agreed and suggested it wasn't the best suit. Its not special considering the fabric pops up a couple times a year on ebay as well

it might if they'd photographed it on a dummy. jackets photographed on hangers are pretty useless for judging the silhouette.

Really? There's a lot about that gray pinstripe that says "pre-war" to me. For example: Wide lapels, with a wide gorge, and soft cure to the lapel and collar points; what looks to be a non-cutaway vest (i.e., it looks like the vest is cut so the bottom button buttons); a high button stance (look at where the bottom button sits relative to the hip pockets); and, a triplet pinstripe pattern with alternating colors.

They can't all be belt backs after all
Personally, I really like that gray suit (and the brown twill one too!), but I guess that's all a matter of individual tastes.

I'm not saying its not a 30s suit. and I'm not saying it has to be a belt back either. I'm just saying the cut has a lot to be desired. Believe me I appreciate a simple suit, Id wear them. But I wouldn't think twice about them.

The first suit posted could fit me if I take the trousers back in. I might give it a try. Thanks for tip. I don't mind the conservative nature as long the suits isn't black. I can always wear the sportcoats I already have.

I can understand people wanting a certain look or cut when searching for old suits, but for me, if it's from the '30s and fits me properly I'd wear it, conservative or sporty cut/style. You really can't go wrong with that decade.

As far as price goes, whatever the market will bear . . . market forces, supply and demand, etc.

. . . that said, I agree that instinct/experience says $350 for a waist under the 34" threshold is a tough sell.

As far as the brown twill suit, I have a feeling this one will fetch a pretty good price, irrespective of the issues with the lining. It's definitely on the bigger side.

If I wasn't saving pennies for vacation next month, I might take a swipe at either/both of these suits!

Personally, I can't see any details of "cut" in any of the rather low grade photos (particularly the brown one). As hbk says, maybe if they were on mannequins.

I would bet, however, from the measurements that both of them will look like middle 1930s suits when worn by someone they fit. However both have less than the standard 6" chest-waist "drop". The brown measures 45" chest and 40" waist. The chap was spherical (approx 41 chest and 40 waist), making it impossible for the tailor to significantly suppress the waist of the jacket. This will obviously affect the jacket silhouette. It's simply not possible, with that physique, to generate the standard middle 30s suppressed waist silhouette. The grey one measures 38" chest and 33" waist, so while a smaller drop than would be standard, with this one it is easier to make the silhouette conform to the middle 30s standard. While it looks like your standard middle 1930s suit, it is just that: standard. It would fit me, so it's small, and $350 is just too high for such a suit, independent of how nice the fabric looks.

unsold. if they'd taken good clear photos, given it a decent write up, and started the bidding lower i think it would have sold (and might have gone over $350).
