Here's two Stetsons I saw on the Pinterest website that were custom made for Tom Mix. The hatbox for the first one says White Coney .... Nutria. I'm guessing White Coney is the color and Nutria is what the hat is made from.

Stetson of unknown quality. Has 3 inch brim and 5 1/2 inch open crown. The tags date it approximately early 1930's. Has a replacement sweatband. I think the Block Number is 322, which is documented being for a 5 1/2 inch Depth hat.

Ran across this Stetson “Sombrero” out there. There was some talk earlier in this thread about Stetson sending them out for the embroidery work. The ad copy seems to imply that the hat box is not original to the hat (and I suspect the liner isn’t either). Still … I’d wear it!

View attachment 706148 The hatbox seems original to the hat because the same name is on the box as on the sweatband. The box says the hat is of Excellent Quality, even though the sweatband says Number 1 Quality and the liner says Real Nutria. So you have 3 quality grades to choose from.

1920's Stetson, with 3 1/2 inch finished brim and 7 inch open crown. It feels like a Number 1 Quality hat or a lower quality Nutria hat such as Nutria Quality or 1X Nutria. I'm not sure if there's anyone who can distinguish the difference just by touch or feel.

Boss Raw Edge

Hi, new member to the forum. I've been visiting for years, and I've learned a TON about vintage clothes, but finally had a question that prompted me to register.

I just found a Stetson Boss Raw Edge with a Fray sweatband that's in pretty nice shape. Reading blog posts about dating old Stetsons has left me a little confused about the age. I thought that an orange reorder tag meant it was from mid-late 20s, but the retailer "E.G. Barnaby & Co." disappears from Minneapolis city directories after 1921. Can anyone offer any insight as to the age of this beauty?

With a Lot Number of 475, I'd date this hat about 1906.

Hello all, been a while since I’ve posted here. I figure this one is worth a drop in to the lounge…

Was lucky to come across this (1930s?) 4x beaver BRE. From what I understand it’s quite a rarity.

It came with a low telescope and I couldn’t resist popping the 7” crown out & tuning it up. The sweatband needed repair along with some other elements. Less was more on this fixer-upper. Im over the moon about it.
Some of the softest and finely finished felt I’ve seen. I have a same era Clear Nutria, same block & proportions, and this takes the cake.
I’ve included photos of the hat while in repair. Nice way to see the deets on the back of the sweat…
7” 406 block. 4” brim
LOT 5402
Marked “Belly”? Or “Billy” on the backside of the sweat. Could it be beaver belly?

Thanks for tuning in… hope you’re all well.

Recently bid on a mystery hat in an online auction that had only 1 photo that was a Birds Eye view. All I knew is the hat was a Stetson and it looked old. Well to my surprise it turned out to be a 5 X Clear Beaver Quality. If I told ya how much I paid someone here might just kill me.

Looking like a 5 1/4” crown by 3 1/4” brim, double stacked 3 cord and a slick .5” under bind ribbon.

The difference between this 5x CB and the 4x beaver I posted 2 posts back is remarkable. It’s far softer, dense, and malleable. I’d have to say that they are very much in their own ball parks. Unfortunately the LOT # is unattainable. But the block tag was easy to get. I’ve seen white block tags before but I find the characteristic of this one to be a tad different. I believe it says 817 “Thomas”.

Without a size tag, I’m not sure of how to date this hat. Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to wearing this one a bit!

Man… what a find!! I would assume 30s would be a safe bet, you going to rock it OC? That first photo proportions look awesome! I wonder if that block # has been documented elsewhere too. Great pick up Jesse!

Thanks buddy. Just put a little double dimple in the front. It adds to the character of this one! Good point on the block # I’ll have to check the forum for that.
