Cookeville, Tenn relatives ( one of my grandfathers in the upper right on the first pic.... it was a ww1 reunion group... 328th infantry regiment ... Alvin Yorks outfit). Growing up I remember him in an Open Road ( he was a big LBJ fan) and that he had a whole closet of Champ hat boxes. I have ONE of his champ Featherweights from the 50s. Sadly when he passed a cousin bought the family farm and his wife basically threw everything in the old homestead away

Ragland, Alabama relatives. both sides of the family were hat guys regardless whether they were dirt farmers or fancy town folks...
Well, there were a few decades in the early 1900s when Federal law demanded all men in the U.S. wear some form of dress hat, so I'm guessing they didn't have much choice. I'm kinda' glad I wasn't around then, 'cause I would probably have spent a great deal of time in jail/prison for breaking those laws; I didn't start wearing hats regularly until late in the year 2008.

While I know of NO US or colonial law regarding mandatory hat or cap wearing....England DID have one...way back when.

"Elizabethan England (1571): The English Parliament passed the Act for the Making of Caps to bolster the domestic wool trade. It required all males over the age of six (excluding the nobility and upper classes) to wear a woolen cap on Sundays and holidays, or face a daily fine. This mandate was abolished in 1597"

AND THEN....I guess they had a beard tax too........

While I am afraid of MANY government taxes....I will never have to worry about a beard tax....;):D
