Cool Borsalino… massively overpriced - what would you pay?

I really like this one. I actually like the vibe of the seller too… curated, already cleaned up, respect for the product, etc. I just don’t want to pay for it.

Nominally a 7 1/2, but closer to 7 3/8 in actual fit. If you found this in the wild what would it have to cost for you to be willing to pick it up?

The price is very high for this type of hat. It's a made-in-Italy copy of a typical American hat. I don't see the point of spending such a sum when the US market can offer similar results at a better price and probably a true beaver felt. This is not beaver and maybe hare. If it were a different Borsalino, one might consider it, but this isn't the case. For the price I pay in Italy if I findt, it is at maximum €100 and it's certainly not high on my wish list

It’s eBay and it’s a hat. I don’t need over 30 paragraphs about the seller and gentleman and other BS to sort through with only about four directly relating to the hat. Does remind me of someone, though. Overpriced? Yeah, to me but a hat, like anything else is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Typically, unless comically overpriced, most ‘for sale’ hats aren’t publicly discussed. No rules as such, just the common sense of collectors hoping not to draw more attention to something they might be interested in.

Yeah I figured that was a thing - I personally am not worried about it with hats I’m interested in - I figure if someone else wants it more than I do they can have it. Though I would try to avoid stomping on someone else’s deal.

Also this one IS comically overpriced, in my opinion, and I’m trying to balance discretion with figuring this stuff out. Some of you guys are very good at finding nice hats cheap - I ain’t on that list lol.

I also understand supply and demand and that whole “what someone is willing to pay” thing. That’s what I was asking - what are those dudes that are good at this willing to pay. Also operating under the assumption that most everyone on this forum is looking for marginalized items, not optimized- that, I assume, is where the window to find deals is. So, most people are looking for hats that don’t look perfect in the listing I would assume.

“Massively overpriced”? “Comically overpriced”? Maybe for the daily fashion show, but that’s up to the individual collector to decide.

I think of myself as an American hat collector, always the best that I can buy. Even in selecting American custom hatmakers to clone vintage hats no longer to be found. So I would not be interested should I encounter such a Borsalino “in the wild”.

Among other American makers, Stetson & Resistol Western dress fedoras of the 1920’s - 1930’s are one of my soft spots. They are not that common because of their age & blocking, so I am going to disagree with Daniele. I see the “typical American hat” as a snap brim fedora with a wide ribbon crown @ <5” & a diamond or C-crown crease. If you want cheap, they are more common.

The 3-cord ribbon would support the Sellers age estimate of a 1940’s - 1950’s Borsalino in the style of an earlier American Western fedora. Therefore I would see it as a rare & unusual Borsalino to be desired by the serious collector. Not so much for the fashionistas.

I have not purchased a pristine Borsalino in years, My prized possession is a 1950's Borsa in pristine condition. It is much like this one in appearance. I paid $250 here in the Lounge from a respected collector thinning his collection. It depends on how badly you want the Borsalino badging. For that $$ you can commission a custom 100% beaver FEPSA felt, and have money left over for a deposit on a decent Panama.
Your money, your choice of how to spend it. I dropped $200 on a dram of 40 year old single malt.......when I could have sampled a 12 year old for $15. My money, my choice.
