Some people are broken, others near them whole, or cracked a bit, and aware their faults but
nevertheless struggle valiantly with their lot in life for better or worse. And fifty six years ago,
British film director David Lean gathered an exceptional thespian group along the ****** Peninsula coast
in County Kerry, Southwest Ireland to film Ryan's Daughter, a glass menagerie filled fragile people
set in the final days of the First World War. Taken page off Flaubert's classic Madam Bovary, Ryan's Daughter
focuses female ***uality within somatic desire frustration and wartime male absence, settling scene
on a fifytish schoolmaster widower played Robert Mitchum. Sarah Miles is Rosie Ryan, nimble ****oris, lonely
village publican owner's daughter, of average intellect cursed dominant libido. Mitchum, in what he considered some of his best work, ably portrays Charles Shaughnessy; whom inexplicably in what subsequently appears middle age impotence, marries ***ually starved Rosemary.
Ryan's Daughter is such a draw because this man's solitude overpowered innate sense only to reap sorrow.
His adversary is British Army major Randolph Doryan, played Christopher Jones, a wounded limp legged
veteran of front line France invalided Ireland garrison command. Doryan is shell shocked and suffers combat
fatigue, known now as post traumatic syndrome. On a routine visit to the film's local village, Kirrary, he stops
inside the Ryan pub where he suffers an intense flashback, assisted by hymen intact chaste wed Rosie.
The cuckoldry stage set, the pair later ride together to a country rendezvous and consumate their affair
genesis; afterwhich, outside events will reveal their romance. Rosie will be beaten and stripped, her hair
shorn for having slept with her British officer. Doryan commits *******. Cuckold Charles and his errant
unconsumated bride are left alone to sort their sorrow alone, or together.
