Being raised in a town with a lot of deep sea trawlermen east coast UK, when I was a teen in one of the savoury Dock front bars, one of the drunk old salts dropped his strides to show he had Popeye tattooed astride his fire hose legs either side and Popeyes hands gripping said fire hose haha he then went one to show he had eyes tattooed on his *** cheeks
I had a neighbor that had the head of a blonde woman with her mouth agape on one hip, a brunette doing the same on the other hip and in script under his belly button it said “B**ches Aint Sh*t.” Which honestly is never fun it’s just super immature and vulgar at any age. At least to me. But it was a 19 year old mistake. Let’s just say once he finally fell in love with his now wife that one got covered up real fast. He spent a fortune but it was money well spent considering like I said they are now married with multiple kids, including a young daughter. Who if she dated a young version of himself he wouldn’t let her out of the house with him hahaha. He’d have strong words for that young man haha.

Ah, my dear old dad. How was the drunk ******* doing?

You didn't lend him any money, did you?

After talking about getting inked for years, I've decided to remain ink-free. After all this time, it seems silly to start now.
My wife, however, has many randomly placed Tatts, most of which are connected to our relationship. I like 'em.

Break that seal and it will be hard to stop.

But— why not? If something means something to you, go for it.

I’ve got 35 or 40. If i didnt have any today i would not start. I’ll get more because at this point it doesn’t much matter. When i got my 1st tattoo 32 years ago i feel it was a bit of a statement. Now the gram is full of 20 year olds covered toes to ears.

Haha, I hear you. I am the polar opposite, though.

All of my “randomly placed Tatts” have some connection to my bio, and I wouldn’t want to miss a single one (even if some designs I wouldn’t choose again).
However, I always liked my ladies ink-free. Some have questioned the inherent absurdity of this, but one likes what one likes…

This!

Got my first one aged 24 when I had just moved to London. Biggest adventure of my life thus far and well worth more than a T-Shirt. At that time (1994), Tattoos were strictly reserved for those with a shady character. Now, well, you know….

I have actually stopped pretty much. There are a few tempting options, but the whole thing is so arbitrary by now…

Pretty much the same for me. I have two tattoos from the early 90s - back when people said you’d never get a job if the employer found out you had a tattoo.

If I was 30 years younger I’m not sure if I’d either not get anything because they are so ubiquitous now or really dive-in because of the acceptance and freedom.

I do spend a lot of time looking at all the cool work artists do now. Beautiful watercolours, florals, neo-traditional Asian and fine line work that look like masterpieces. So much prettier than the basic macho walls of flash we used to see.

i also think it’s a bit like the old guys in leather jackets thread - seeing an older guy with old tattoos can look very cool. But an older guy with fresh ink/ first tattoo sorta looks midlife crisis.

I'm in one of those old-fashioned button-up professions, where appearing clean and sleak is part of the deal. I like wearing leather jackets when I'm not working because it gives me that edgy rugged look that I want, which is a huge contrast from my usual suit-and-tie look. I used to sport a long-hair undercut to go with the edgy look, but not anymore.

I work for a big-4 accounting firm and seen the evolution from nobody would really say anything but people would look at you funny if you didn’t at least go through the motions of covering up to partners with full sleeves.

I honestly don’t really think about my tattoos all that much a few months after I get them. It’s hard to imagine me regretting them, and pretty much all the people who I know who do do so because they got the name of an ex or something tattooed on them.

This is my latest, shu-ha-ri (守破離), a Japanese idiom that means follow, break, leave behind. It’s used as steps to the mastery of something. I had to hunt down a tattoo artist who was decent at writing Chinese characters, since as someone who can read it, it drives me crazy when I see a tattoo that was clearly copied without knowing how the characters would actually be written.

You guys!

I open a thread and the next thing I know I’m doing a deep dive on tattoo artists instead of deck jackets. I reached out to an artist to see if they will be in town when I head home to Australia in July. Thinking about some eucalyptus leafs like this:

Most of my tattoos are sigils of intent created specifically for protection and to ground and manifest will and intent into physical reality, so very literally "psychic armor" in this case.

Guy called Nikko Hurtado specializes in portrait and realism his work is off the scale which I guess is why he's in high demand

Seriously! This thread sent me down the rabbit hole and now I’m selling stuff to finance a tattoo and reaching out to potential artist.

I came close like this about four years ago, but decided my wife’s disapproval was stronger than my own desire. We’ll see about this time, hahah.

My wife claims to like my tats but regularly makes sure that “now it’s enough“. Strange, isn’t it?!

Be that as it may, while I do have ideas for two or three additional pieces, I am largely done. Only thing that is really “missing” are the forearms, but I’ve decided that these would stay off limits until retirement, so that’s that.
