Here in Madrid -4 morning so will have a woolly Jersey of some description on haha in the mountains Sierra's it's -13c
I was impressed by your Submariner’s ecru sweater - it is like one I bought at Silvermans in London about 20 years ago and still wear. I have the Navy version as well.
I really like Madrid. My partner and I had a winter break there several years ago mainly to enjoy the Prado, Reina Sofía Museum, etc. I remember having lunch in an Argentinian restaurant near the royal palace and seeing the snow fall.

That Sub Sweater believe it or not originally came from Uniqlo shop here in Madrid, 100% Lambswool, lovely to wear as it's not itchy and warm enough under anything, ah you came to Centro Madrid, did you walk round the palace gardens? And I think you saw the Picasso Guernica no? I also had the Silverman's off white Jersey living in East Coast England

I remember Silverman's 20 years ago, hell you could buy vintage British camo smocks reasonable priced back then, not so now, even Belgy post war smocks are through the roof now

I certainly did walk around the palace gardens and I saw the Guernica, which I had wanted to see for a long time. I was also impressed by the Goyas in the Prado.

It was very much sweater weather and if I remember correctly I wore my Royal Navy ribbed wool sweater with patches on the shoulders and elbows - the classic Woolly Pully!

I have been going to Silvermans since I was a schoolboy in the ‘70s/early 80s.

Interesting to hear that you lived in East Anglia.

I know that (in the Northern Hemisphere at least), it might not be the best time to be posting about knitwear, but are there any fellow aficionados of the classic military commando sweater or 'woolly pully' (ribbed wool, patches at shoulders and elbows)?

I have been wearing them since my schooldays and now have quite a collection in terms of colours: olive green, navy, air force blue, black, ***** green. ... It would be good to obtain one of the earliest versions, which were a light khaki colour I think.

They are comfortable, breathable and durable, last for years and have a timeless quality. Do others on this site have such positive experiences of these sweaters?
I was issued on in 1981, wore the **** out of it. Typically wore it under my utility blouse (camo shirt) and it was toasty. Also wore it for years after I got out of the service, often hunting our other outdoors activities. I think my wife must have found it a new home because it was just no longer there at some point.

Both you and the Woolly Pully have a distinguished service record.

The best source for a replacement is www.outdoorknitwear.com

I have been a reliable customer over the years.

I just walked the dogs and it was 1c here, I wouldn't have minded that but that strong wind with it wasn't kind, hood right up on the N3B :) oh and a fair Isle style woolly underneath
I have a couple of Fair Isles as well. It’s around -1 here and icy: Navy Blue Guernsey sweater today: nice thick wool with a firm yarn.

I like patterned jerseys as well, I have a thick sweater, not a Guernsey though, just about to do a last dog walk, -2c now, sounds like we're both in the grip of winter :D

I don’t know if they are the same ones as sold by Silvermans, and I’m sure it’ll have been mentioned somewhere on here in the past, but the Submariner sweaters produced by TW Kempton under their Outdoor Knitwear / Niffi Nautical label offer great ‘bang for buck’
I have 2 (Natural and Navy) and these get pretty regular wear at this time of year.
They also produce a good replica of the ‘Das Boot’ captain’s sweater, which they call the ‘Greenwich Quarter Zip’

If you keep an eye on the Outdoor Knitwear website or sign up to their mailing list they also regularly offer discount codes and deals.

Quite possibly, I'm happy with my ecru Lambswool sweater, as in Madrid when it starts warming up it warms up so sweater wearing is short. That Das Boot zippered smock sweater, I had similar in North Yorkshire years ago, I liked it, I had a American one same time but it had 3 wood buttons instead of a zipper

Our last summer was hitting 45c sometimes :( so I enjoy all the other 3 haha
Yes, the summer would be my problem with living in Madrid. I have thought about it as I have an EU passport (my father was Irish-born) and I do think about leaving the U.K. for a European city when I retire because of the diminishing quality of life and the scary rise of the far right. I just haven’t decided which city yet. …

Summer is awful in London: hot, humid, with the warmth clinging on at night. Yuck!

I know OKW very well. They are my source for traditional Woolly Pullies.

I already have the Ecru (Natural) and Navy submariner sweaters. If I need to replace them, OKW will be my port of call.
