Oddball Wrangler Denim

Hey Folks, I came across a pair of Wranglers that I'm not familiar with. They "appear" to be selvedge. They have a button fly and are labeled as "Shuttle Loom, Get Your Edge Back", and also the name "Colton" is printed on the label. As close as I can see, ( from my limitted digging) the only comparison would be to a 77 or 88mwz; but these have stretch and a zipper, were mine are 100% Cotton with a button fly. They also don't have the decal/on the inside of the fly; likely due to the buttons. Thoughts?

They are made in Turkey? I'm going to email Wrangler tomorrow and send some pics. I only paid like $13 US for them at a thrift store and they fit well so if they turn out to be something it's a bonus:) I'll post their reply .

$13 bucks? What a deal! That’s what I call being at the right place at the right time!

I've not seen these before, they're interesting. Can't find them on the UK site (I see they now do 13MWZ, which wasn't the case as recently as a year ago, though at well over double the US price it will likely be cheaper still to import them....). Could it be a line made specifically for the EU market? I've had a few pairs of selvedge jeans in the last decade or so from Luctec and Soldier of Fortune that were made in Turkey. Pretty sure I had a pair of Freddies that was labelled made in Turkey nearly twenty years ago, though they now advertise as "made in England" so that appears to have changed. Turkey is the source of a fair bit of the denim sold in mainland Europe, I believe though. My 13MWZ are all labelled "Made in Mexico", so it would make sense if they similarly went to Turkey for a line intended for a European market. The UK and US Wrangler websites are different things, and the US site won't sell to a UK customer (even when I was trying to order 13MWZ when those weren't available on the UK site), so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a variation in the product line otherwise.

I think you're correct that they are intended for the European market. I have found similar pants online, but nothing that are both selvedge and button fly. Hopefully Wrangler can help me out:)

Lol, this is the response from Wrangler, I'm still not satisfied:)
I figured it you would get a response like that or perhaps not a response at all. However in my opinion, wrangler has always been a good product, but I would like to see more made in USA like they were many years ago. I have some 13mwz jeans that I paid $29 for and they are by far some of my favorite jeans. They are made in Mexico and some of the thickest well made jeans I have. I like the what they call “cowboy cut” because the rise is about 11” inches. I have very expensive jeans in my closet but I always reach for the wrangler..
What are the rise on those button fly? I think the vintage wrangler jeans ( pre 1990’s) were generally a higher rise. I don’t think the button fly jeans you have are that vintage. My guess is late 1990’s to mid 2000’s

Occurs to me these are the first button fly Wranglers I've ever seen.... Even back in 1947 when they introduced the cowboy cut jean as the 11MWZ (the 11 being for 11oz denim - it became 13MWZ a couple of years later when they went to 13oz denim), the zipper was a big selling point and a novelty in the denim world (MWZ of course stands for "Men's, With Zip"). Big fan of my 13MWZs too. I first discovered them about eight years ago. Only found out today that at some point since I last bought a pairs two or three years ago that they now sell them on the UK site, though at a mark-up. £65 UK; buying them online from the US and paying shipping, the last pair I ordered still came in at about £40. Took a couple or three weeks to arrive, but worth it for the saving.

The pattern for the 13MWZ hasn't changed since they were introduced as 11mwz in 1947. Lovely stuff. The extra length in the leg over the stated inside leg measurement is a big plus too - lots of room for a good cuff in there, which for me is essential in jeans. I order them with a notional 36" inside leg and have enough for a double-folded 3" cuff. Joyous.

When they went to 13oz at the back end of the 40s/ turn of the 50s, they stayed like that for many years; weight now varies a little depending on choice of cloth (different coloured denims on offer vary a little); I think my standard indigo and shadow black pairs are 13.75-14. Which is great; I've found once you go beyond that, the heavier the denim is the faster it wears on the upper thigh, which is where all my jeans go first. Usually after about two years of regular wear, then I can get another couple of years out of them with some careful patching. Iron-on denim repair patches, which I always loopstitch on after they've cooled as I find otherwise the ends start to peel off once they've been washed a few times. Tempted to have a go at using just a piece cut from an old pair that have gone past wearable for patches, but not sure how I'd stop that fraying on the edges, and there'd be a hassle with trying to glue 'em on first. I like the iron-on stuff because it sets them in place which makes them much easier to sew!

I don’t roll my jeans up anymore as I feel that being in my mid 50’s is a little out of league now, however I do appreciate that look. .. you are a wealth of knowledge my friend and I appreciate it!

You're welcome. :)

Yeah, it's not a look for everybody. Vive la differance! ;)

I used to be a Wrangler guy, but the last couple years my go-to's started failing on me in short order.
I tried buying the better offerings on their site, but they were all undersized.
I had really high hopes for the cowboy cut, but on top of being undersized they had unusably tight pockets.

Diamond gusset jeans is my new Go-to, but I like the AA101 made for All American clothing a bit better than the standard GBR101 from DGJ.
The AA101's have more generous pockets and are nearly $20 cheaper, otherwise both are a 14.5oz American denim with a higher rise waist sturdy pocket bags and the diamond shaped seat gusset.

I wonder if OP's jeans will turn out to be very valuable... That would be a fun plot twist!
