I circumvent the problem you describe by sticking to jackets that are fairly clean inside and out. I completely rule out jackets with tatty liners and those with mold/mildew odour; just the odour, no colony even, would be enough to raise the risk. Mold/mildew odour means traces of the spores are there (not just the omnipresent spores, I mean they're literally everywhere in the world in low concentration, but leftovers from a colony on or near the jacket).

So this jacket never actually got listed here on FL, but I wanted to let all you great folks know this jacket isn't on the market anymore, and it is being donated (actually it should likely be trashed.)

Why?

Well this post that member @Rabbit put out there from 2020 (at the top of this post) still stands true today, and this jacket was getting worse & worse of an odor the longer it was in my place. Yes, BTW I did wash it (2X) and then after a thorough drying down, conditioned it a couple times as well. I even took it to a dry cleaner to see what they could do with it and the very honest lady indicated that they "send out the jacket" for this service, and they always come back better, but even that service does not remove odors, especially mildew.

Here's the wording that really caught my attention, and changed my mind to simply get rid of it:

I guess the end lesson here is always ask what, if any odors the seller may know that the jacket has. In this case I could not get it clearly out of the ebay seller from Florida, so I should have walked away. Maybe I could still try a return, but it's been a month already.

This is a very nice Cal. I bought it for $420 but the woman's measurements are off by 1.5 inches. The pit to pit on this is 22 inches (see the photo below).

I returned this jacket, explained what was wrong (and included photos) and received a refund: but the woman then told me I was wrong and the jacket is indeed 20.5 inches pit to pit.

I asked her to send me a photo of the full measurement but she has not done so. This is NOT 20.5 inches or I would have kept it!

If you can get this for $400ish, it is well worth it. There is a slight seem issue on a sleeve (see photo) which I also pointed out to her but she didn't include it in the new listing, which is really underhanded of her.

Here are my photos and then below them is the eBay link. She originally had it listed at $800+ price and then cut it in half, which is when I bought it. I don't think I would pay $800 for it, but $400 is fair if she cuts it in half again.

This jacket made me fall in love with Cals. I am searching for a size 38, if anyone has one they'd like to sell.

That is very nice. If it were a bit larger, I would highly consider it. I doubt the waist area would work for me.

She halfed the price already. The new listing posted last night but it's down to $449 this morning. When I bought it, I made offers starting at 350 and it was finally accepted at $420.

That is very nice. If it were a bit larger, I would highly consider it. I doubt the waist area would work for me.

I didn't think to measure the hem.

My waste is 35 inches on the measuring tape. Over jeans and a belt, this fit me perfectly loosened all the way.

I agree, when I found the stitching issue, I considered returning it just for that. But once I realized how big it was, it was a no brainer.

I have no idea how much hassle or money it would be to fix. The rest of this jacket is very nice.

$200? Sure. But 400 is also fair imo. These Cals seem to be getting more expensive than they used to be.

Only $200? Oh my—are Cals really considered that much worse than, say, a Buco or a used Aero? Or is this mostly because of the stitching issue on that particular jacket?


Personally, I find the 1945 Cal cross-zip design far more attractive than most modern repro jackets with elongated bodies.

When it comes to vintage, Cal is underpriced and Buco/Hercules is overpriced. Pricing isn’t necessarily indicative of value. Pricing is determined by supply and demand.

Generally though, stitching is a pretty easy DIY fix. I wouldn’t shy away from loose stitching when it comes to buying vintage.
