I can agree with others that I prefer natural materials over synthetics for breathability alone, though I haven't found a favorite yet. Maybe it's just my imagination, but on the jackets I've had with a synthetic slippery sleeve lining I always feel like my arms get too warm after a while... meanwhile on my jacket that has a full cotton liner including the arms, they feel fine. I've been trying to look for a cotton satin that has that same kind of texture for the best of both worlds.

I've been going back and forth on giving Lost Worlds a try but I'm not sure on having a full nylon liner, and the alternatives are probably another huge upcharge. Although from what others have said it's supposed to be really good.

Anyone ever given linen or hemp a try? Supposedly tougher than cotton and still very breathable, though they both tend to get wrinkly so I'm not sure how they would look, maybe best for a lighter jacket.

First is a Cornish tartan from Locharron:

Then Troy blanket lining in a 1920 Work Coat. The lining faces outward on the collar:

And lastly is another Loch Carron tartan - Scrimegour Ancient:

The Cornish tartan in the Highwayman is definitely the favourite lining out of the three - it's never gotten a hole in it. My other Aeros have cotton drill lining in red, olive and brown. The drill is plainest but also consistently really durable.

I am afraid that 100% linen or 100% hemp would be too "sticky" or "grippy" (sorry for my poor english) as they have a very coarse texture... For sleeves' lining I'd like to try a natural fiber mixed with silk, which is really nice and smooth but a little fragile when used alone (my bespoke suits are all lined with pure silk)

I have the linen hemp type lining in my Jelado jacket. On the skin it feels very similar to unlined jacket (flesh side inside). I would almost skip the linen hemp and just go unlined, but with nylons in the sleeves.

You're right that polyester based lining will get too warm after a while, think Uniqlo heat tech. A lot of polyester blends are being marketed as Rayon or Nylon but they're not quite there. Both Rayon and Nylon will have distinctive grooves weaves in the fabric, like worsted wool. Poly is more like fake cotton. If going synthetic always go for the ones that looks like it has grooves weaves, they're very breathable. (3rd pic at the bottom, blow up to see the weaves)

I agree with earlier posters on GMW and 40s wool being special. I tend to prefer natural materials over man-made. I used to not like lining and prefer wearing my jacket unlined. I especially like wearing deerskin unlined, it feels like cashmere. That was until I tried Kit Karson’s wool-lined jacket. I definitely want to get more wool-lined jackets now, like early Hercules or Sportclad/Kurland.

I've never seen a rayon/wool blend! Must be nice.

I wondered why there isn't that many people that go crazy on the lining here as some guys do on suit jackets (think those football players' dollar bill printed linings). I think one of the reasons must be the silk durability... And maybe heat insulation as well, as the point of a leather jacket lining is different of a suit one.

Yeah, I agree with going a little crazy on the lining for a custom. I think it was @JMax who made a Regius jacket with a sashiko printed one, that came out particularly nice.

I think so too! I mean, one could go with a very sober, classical shell and give some spice to the jacket by going with a colourful lining. One example that I quite liked is @Brandrea33 new Goodwear Hércules with the shiny golden lining. I'd like to see better pictures of that, TBH (I think that shows how personal a lining could be, even when showing the jacket you might not get a full idea of it). Another one that got my attention is a jacket on Field Leathers Instagram page with what seems like a pink sleeve lining haha Not that I'd use something like that, but seemed like a cool detail.

I know you have a pretty nice collection there! Moleskin must be nice... I only have it on my pockets and always makes me wonder... How warm is it? I quite like your hounds tooth Lewis. I was considering something like that myself. I think this is heavier weight than Aero's Lochcarron, isn't it?
@JMax do you have photos of that sashiko lining?

And a related question for the group. If I could either source the fabric myself or convince the maker to source it, is there any reason a sashiko fabric would be a bad choice of lining for a horsehide jacket? I'm looking at a custom leather n-1 and had decided on cotton drill, but the thought of sashiko is pretty damn intriguing....
