I copped this, wondering if it was a good deal for the price considering its all wrinkled up, hopefully I can restore the wrinkles a bit. I also got the Steerhide version that I bought before I saw this one.

And a Vanson C2, just waiting on Japan to process my stuff.

It has the MC-style back, rather than halfbelt.

Is it a 50s jacket in that case, coming later than those in your photos?

I think that's the same jacket as mine. Great score! The horsehide on these is really nice.

To me, these jackets represent the move from the "Aviator" look, cross zip with half-belt to the motorcycle style with kidney panel..the earliest Sears MC jackets have this half-belt design as found on the Wool lined Hercules, which are replaced with the more "modern" look back around 1950.

All these Ward jackets with this label are produced by California Sportswear. These are probably the last to have this label.

All these transitions occur around 1950.

As Marc says above, the Horsehide on these jackets is very nice and on par with anything being produced at the time.

This is the Windward (Montgomery Ward) label that followed. Note it does not say California, only West. JC Penney had a similar phrase during this time, Made in the West. I do have a new theory on who made some of these "Western Made" jackets, not California Sportswear.

It also feels heavier than 12oz I guess it's the way it is woven.

Cal fresh out the box from Reg. This started as a Thedi day but it’s definitely ending up Cal! Pic-heavy but y’all I’m so over the moon with this one

The fit feels perfect. I can move around with no issues. Will have to give it some long wear to determine if it aggravates my shoulder but it certainly feels less restrictive than the Aero 50s halfbelt in tank armor CXL I had recently.

The hide is beautiful, weighty but disappears while on, interesting grain especially the back. Just incredible.

The fit feels perfect. I can move around with no issues. Will have to give it some long wear to determine if it aggravates my shoulder but it certainly feels less restrictive than the Aero 50s halfbelt in tank armor CXL I had recently.

Especially on the back it looks like the effect on some Lost Worlds hides. Not sure if it’s hide composition or just age?

Pretty sure it is hide grain. Looks like LW horsehide, absolutely. I just never saw these kinds of striations on steer, maybe someone can chime in. Awesome jacket. There is something about those Cals, no doubt. On my cross zip all the weight disappeared as well once you put it on. I felt ensconced in it.

Just took a look on the Cal Leather site, they have a few old horsehide jackets for sale so it’s possible this one is horsehide. The only tag is the little one by interior pocket with Cal-Leather name on it

I finally pulled the trigger on a new jacket. I just paid for a Vanson Maverick with Thurston Brothers. Going with one of the dark brown leathers that Thurston offers. Now I wait for the fit jacket.

Carrie was super helpful btw. I will keep everyone posted through the process.
