How many new jackets do you have coming (and how many potential ones)?

Yeah, that is the Freewheelers Sunset in Shinki deerskin.

Not sure about the feel of deer in hotter climates. It has some heft and feels like a warm blanket is draping on you. Goat might be the way to go.

Holly at Aero said that the lightest weight leather that they have is their battered steerhide, and Theodoros at Thedi said he would do some research and get back to me on a light goatskin or capeskin. I recognize that leather jackets in the tropics is a bit of an oxymoron, but it does get down below 70 degrees Fahrenheit here, at night for several weeks in the year.

I would guess light goat would be a good option. Our navy handed it out to their Pacific pilots during the 2nd war. Minus the fur collar good to go

My deerskin jacket actually feels the best of all my jackets in warmer weather, though I don't know how universal that is.

Not sure if this is relevant, but my experience with Aero goat and Aero Vicenza is that the Vicenza is lighter to wear.

Thanks for the tip. I guess the issue of looking for a light weight or Summer weight jacket is more complicated than just the weight or thickness. I have an Aero Vincenza that feels heavier than my Himel in Shinki horsehide. I had JL make a M500 out of 2.5 oz naked cowhide a couple years ago that has a nice drape. My GW goatskin cossack is pretty light, though it will take a long time to soften up. As others go into the 6 oz. realm in search of the thickest jacket that still has a nice hand and drape, I suppose I am going in the other direction. I am heading in the 2 oz. direction of leather that still has a decent feel and drape.

I've thought a lot about warmer climate leather over 30 years - given my location.

I agree with you. The ideal hide for me is around 2 oz-2.2 oz. I can wear jackets made of that for several months of each year.

I also have a JL 2.5 oz naked cow jacket I had Alan make for me some years ago. [By the way, I always thought Americans were crazy to buy Aero when JL is right there.] JL also made a light cafe racer goatskin jacket for me - it was around 2.2 oz and weighed just over 3 pounds. An Aero goat hide jacket in the same pattern is closer to 4 pounds.

Some goatskin (as used by Aero and Simmons Bilt) seems to be closer to 3 oz thickness. Of course the batches vary.

The 2.5 oz naked cow from JL is about the same weight as my Aero Vicenza hide, only way softer. Again batches vary.

My favorite jacket, a Brooks in light steer weighs 3 pounds.

I have worked out that for my preferences a jacket needs to weigh around 3 pounds to be of most use to me. About half that of a FQHH jacket in my size (42-44).

I also wear light calfskin and lambskin jackets which weigh under 3 pounds.

Reminds me of the movie "Good Morning Vietnam" when Bruno Kirby's character chastises Robin Williams for essentially saying the weather in Vietnam was ****py and the same level of ****PY (hot and humid) every day:

Like Handymike, and Jonesy, I live in a warmer climate and yet I am still drawn to leather jackets. Jonesy's post reads like he was tongue in cheek trolling the majority of the Lounge with his report of such....ahem......"Harsh" sub 70F temperatures that plague his locale of Kauai for "several weeks" a year!!!!! And yet Jonesy somehow finds the fortitude to live on through these vicious winter temps!!!!!!

I know it wasn't meant that way--but reading it this morning made me laugh. I love seeing when Jonesy posts pics. I get so jealous!!! Hawaii and Kauai specifically-----I can't imagine a cooler place to live man.

FWIW, Jonesy, I'm with Handymike---I really like Goat for the durability but also for the graining it has and develops. I haven't seen the same with deer although it DOES have its own unique texture. Not saying Deer would be a bad move and it would certainly give you a different option to add to your collection which would be cool. I just have really got into goatskin the last few years after kinda pooh poohing it in favor of HH and steer. I wish there were more pure civilian models of jackets (not civilian A-2 remakes or military take offs) in Goat. I feel like its the most durable or at least in the top 2 or 3 hides for durability and the light weight and graining make it even more enticing--especially for warmer climate areas.

I have a really cool rare Langlitz Goatskin---its one of 2 non motorcycle models they make and its the Non Bomber model. Its EXCELLENT.

Soooo I vote for the Goat!!! AND I also vote for moving to Kauai at some point in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you'll be very pleased. I had three SB's in the #8 CXL and it was extremely consistent. Very thick and substantial body and the color was absolutely beautiful.

After seeing yours I think your right! I had a sb Cafe racer in shinki that was impressive so I have high hopes.

ELMC may be then, in its long mod in your case Sir. I suppose 46L should look pretty well on you.

New to me Aero black heavy CXL HH with that softened feel. I think it from the early 2000s When Aero was getting heavier CXL HH. The leather is general smooth no creases some graining. The only negative is the wool blanket lining itchy and too warm for the San Francisco peninsula weather. But I got the jacket cheap enough that with a relining I will still be into the jacket for less than $450
The haze is due to the Northern CA fires
