His hat was part of the International Rice Festival in Louisiana. His fedora is covered in rice. Here is a picture with the President, First Lady and the Rice Queens Judith Ann Haydeland.

Was it common to do mug shots with fedoras? If that’s prison issues I guess that’s kind of cool. Not cool enough to go to prison so you can get a hat. Kind of cool in its own way though.
It was probably as common back then as arrest records with tattoo cards are today. Was it common to do mug shots with fedoras? If that’s prison issues I guess that’s kind of cool. Not cool enough to go to prison so you can get a hat. Kind of cool in its own way though.

The one 3rd from the left was being arrested on suspicion of being a member of the Black Hand. The other 2 are LE officers, along with Petrosino.Great pics, HJ. Imposing looking group on the walkway.

Joseph Petrosino (1860 - 1909 assassinated)

He was assassinated in Palermo Italy. The US had passed a law that if an immigrant had been convicted of a crime in the 3 yrs before coming to the US then he/she could be deported. Petrosino was in Italy checking records & a judge leaked what he was doing to the mafia. The Black Hand took credit for his assassination.I've been racking my brain (real one) tryin to remember something I knew about him. Finally had to go to my other (AI) brain to remember he was the first Italian speaking officer in NYPD's history. Helped in his raising by an Irish judge.
