Today would have been my old boss's 88th birthday. He had Alzheimer's, but passed away before he got too out of hand. He had multiple blood clots and spent well under 24 hours in the nursing home. He passed away on September 11 of this year.

Lester was the one who passed the folded flag to my Mom after the graveside service. It tore him up as much as it did her.

In August of 2013, he and I unloaded half a truckload of appliances including washers, dishwashers, and freezers. He was durn near 86 and we were lifting them off the truck onto the ground and wheeling them into the store. I hope my health is that good when I'm 85. Jeeze.

Not a show business, or Era related death, but please indulge me with a moment of silence for the crew of the El Faro, the freighter presumed lost to Hurricaine Joaquin. Several of the crew members were from my state, and two of them were from my town -- and I knew one of them personally. She was the best friend of a close friend of mine, and the entire town is grieving the loss.

Think about the Faro the next time you think about the goods you see in your favorite store -- working men and women risk their lives every time they go to sea to deliver those goods, and sometimes they don't come home.

Several of the crew members were from my state, and two of them were from my town -- and I knew one of them personally. She was the best friend of a close friend of mine, and the entire town is grieving the loss.

Think about the Faro the next time you think about the goods you see in your favorite store -- working men and women risk their lives every time they go to sea to deliver those goods, and sometimes they don't come home.

My sympathy and my respect go out to you, the town and the men and women of the El Faro. And as I do every time I see a policeman or fireman, I will try to think the same when I think about those at sea who risk there lives - and I will stand in respect and gratitude.

A few weeks ago, a very stupid young man who lives in our apartment building came home drunk late on a Saturday night, put a pot on the stove to boil water for pasta and passed out. The pot started to melt, set off the fire alarm and the firemen came and prevented anything worse than a lot (and I mean a lot) of smoke from happening. As I was standing in the lobby (where we were told to go) and I saw the firemen go by, I had the same thought I always do - thank God there are men (and women, this crew just happened to be all men) who do that for us. I spoke with a senior fireman afterwards and he was angry because it was such a stupid thing this young man had done. He wasn't angry about coming out - as he said, that's my job - he was angry that the man had put so many people's lives at risk.

I am very sorry to hear of your, your friend's and your town's loss.

Hubby and I were just talking about El Faro. It was carrying all of the furniture for the renovations to one of the resorts in Mexico his company owns that had been wiped out during a recent hurricane. He and I met when he was working on a fishing ship up in Alaska. I'm so glad that he chose me over working in Alaska. It is such a dangerous life!

We had the same thing happen in our complex, but it was an elderly man who fell asleep in the morning with something on the stove. But.... it happened THREE separate times! Needless to say, after the third incident, he was asked to find somewhere else to live. (And I upped our renter's insurance amount after the third time.) Thank goodness we live next door to a fire station. Very quick response time.

We have started collecting several of the Disney classics, The Shaggy Dog among them. A tragic disease (it runs in my family) and another life shortened.

I had the chance to see them several times. The sheer number of Top 40 hits they recorded would wash over you like a tsunami. One of those shows where you know every word to every song, and you leave very happy. RIP.
