Yeah I thought maybe it would be too hard to identify. Yet the 1930s picture definitely looks straw.

What Hat is this?

I hope this isn't an insignificant enough of a question to be in its own thread, but I was hoping you guys could educate me on what hat Tom Hardy wears in Peaky Blinders.

I always thought Russell Crowe's hat in 3:10 to Yuma was badass, but I'm not really a huge fan of the bowler/derby look.
I love how the brim floats up on the sides and I love that pork pie-ish top. I just don't know what to call it, and I don't know if anyone makes one. I know there are custom hat makers, but I'd rather not have to spend half a G to get one...

All the homburgs i've found have that center crease like you said, Lean. A cursory google search for, "homburg telescope crown", hasn't yielded much, yet. And what do you mean by, "easy to do"? Do you make your own hats?

I think those upturned sides make it more badass and less breaking bad.

Chances of finding a Homburg, your size, already with a telescope crown are next to zero. You will have to buy a normal Homburg & shape it yourself. If you dont' mind used & not looking for a prestigious brand, homburgs can be bought for very little on the bay. Hardy's hat was no doubt, shaped by the show's wardrobe dept.

And what do you mean by, "easy to do"? Do you make your own hats?

Nope, no need to make hats to shape them, with a bit of steam you can more or less shape a hat any which way you choose. There are quite a few vids on youtube on how to shape hats & indeed how to put a telescope crease in, which will explain the process better than I can.

+1 to everything Lean wrote. I want to add that lots of Ebay hats listed as Derbies are actually homburgs with the crowns pushed out.

i don't know if it's appropriate to continue the conversation here, but is a hat former/shaper (?...that round thing) needed to create the correct bump for the telescoping crown? or are there alternate methods of creating a nice even shape?

A "bucket hat." I've also heard them called golf hats. I wear mine either brim up or (mostly) brim down. Actually, you can do whatever you want with the brim. Nice, crisp, crown with an edge on top—the way I like 'em. Hard to find one like that these days.

The asking price isn't too bad. Looks right new.
