I have also noticed I get better service, more doors held for me, and more attention in general when I dress vintage.

Dressing up in general causes people to behave better when around us, since they still have that sense of "Act nicely when being in a presence of a lady"

Owning no modern clothes I forget how much I standout.

Oh, yes.
Wearing "old school" proper clothes that fits the situation apperantly makes you stand out. In the past, it just used to make you a normal person... but I guess "normality" has changed. [huh]

Honestly my defi action of normal has changed seeing as Ive been living "stuck in the 50s" for awhile now lol I just enjoy my corner of happiness and sometimes it takes the odd look for metro realize..."oh maybe I should do this more lol" I think more people need to be shaken up a bit :eusa_clap

My friends and I walked through downtown Los Angeles yesterday, about 6 blocks from a vintage movie event to a restaurant and 6 blocks back to our car. We were in vintage pieces and vintage inspired and we must have gotten 20 or more compliments, from young, old, men and women. One young man stopped to ask why we were dressed up and was surprised to learn that we just enjoyed it. He seemed to be really amazed and impressed!

The more of you that are dressed up, the bigger the response. Everyone seems to just love seeing the fashion. It's great fun. When I'm by myself I worry that I just look like a crazy old lady, but I almost always get compliments.

One funny thing happened a few months ago. They were filming a movie (they always are in downtown L.A.) and people thought we were part of the movie, except we were dressed in the wrong era for the movie. They were really confused!

I've had a mixed bag of responses. I'm either asked where I'm going (they assume a casting call, play, or theme party), or asked why I'm so dressed up. People are usually more curious than critical. In fact, I've had a lot of compliments on my clothing and hair. A lot of girls on campus have gushed over my pin curls and ask me where I get my circle skirts. When it comes to guys, I'm not too sure. I've had lots of cat calls but not really any casual comments or special treatment, like a door being opened for me. My boyfriend loves when I dress vintage, though, and to be frank his opinion is the only one I really care about where men are concerned.

One of my neighbors said "Are you in 1943?!" (as a compliment). I get excited when I get the proper time period!! It beats "Grease" all the time

I was at an estate sale, and an elderly gentleman came up next to me and said, "I'm not getting fresh, but you look really lovely." I told him he made my day, and he laughed and moved on. A few days after that, I was standing in a grocery store aisle, and a middle-aged man was walking past, stopped, and said, "I like your dress," and carried on down the aisle. Funny, though, neither of them was dressed at all well (shorts and t-shirts!).

The first time I actually wore my petticoat under one of my 50's dresses to class, I got a ton of compliments. Many things like "I like your dress" or "I like your style". Since I was a bit uneasy wearing a puffy petticoat out I was pleasantly surprised by all of the nice things people were saying to me. They were all random strangers passing me on the street. Actually, just last week I had a girl tell me that she liked my dress as we crossed paths on the sidewalk. It was a reproduction with a petticoat underneath!
But back at my hometown the comments are much different. "Where are you going?" "Why are you all dressed up?"

I think we all had those.
Even after over a year and a half of everyday wearing of the red lipstick, folks still ask me why am I doing so. And I'm still answering the same old "I don't see why not?!"

I've been getting hit on a lot recently. I blame this new "catcall" culture we're starting to have. And it seems to happen more when I wear something vintage style. Everything from "Will you be my teacher!" to "Hey Baby!" I'm actually kinda invisible when I wear skinny jeans and a T.

That's one of the reasons why I no longer own such clothing items. Not that I desire being noticed, but the feeling of me wearing it; I feel.. transparent, I feel you can see through me. [huh]

The "catcall" stuff up here isn't anywhere near so creative. One of the kids was out changing the letters on the marquee one night and came back in tears because a carload of delinquents had yelled out "hey fata**!" at her. I taught her several useful phrases she might throw back at them in response, covering various unusual feats she might suggest they perform, and she hasn't been troubled since.

Letter-changing is a very vulnerable position. You're standing with your rear end directly facing oncoming traffic, which makes it a prize target for the knuckle-dragger crowd. One night I was doing the letters, and somebody threw a packaged fish-and-chips supper out a car window at me. Just missed, and splattered all over the sidewalk. I was miffed they forgot the malt vinegar.

An "easy target", as they like to call it. There will always be people who "feed" on other's insecurities or moments of being exposed (like in your case). There's a word for those people, but I'm being rather polite, so I'll just say: I pity them.

Today:
I'm carrying a tray with five cups of coffee, and it's 07:00 AM. The employees are arriving. Among them, a certain Member of town Council, and he had something he wanted to tell me. He began with "Look at you, with that grandma....". He stopped. It was that adorable "look" I gave him. I stood there, and starred at his face. After I realized he was not going to brave it out and give me my morning dose of ***ist offense, I greeted him with:
"The day will come when you'll find the way to end this sentence properly".
.....Sure, he's my superior. But, he is NOT, in any way, allowed to bash my brooch.

In my experience, being "invisible" to the cat callers is a good thing. When I wear skinny jeans and Ts, no one looks twice. In vintage (which I would prefer to wear AT ALL TIMES!) I get the "Hey Baby!" ****. Now, I expect people to look at me or maybe even comment on my outfit -- I don't mind either of those situations. Even a friendly "Hello" or "Nice dress" as I walk by -- fine. But the people who hit on me and call me "Baby" and yell at me as I ignore/walk away from them terrify me. So I actually feel safer in skinny jeans, as pathetic as that is.
