Minimalistic, boxy suit. Not normally a fan of those features, but this one looks superb on Jean Marais. Then, what wouldn't? He was clearly a man with very striking features.
Reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Gumby" suit in Red Heat.

Just that I don't think that the tie width needs be consistent with the lapel width. The guy is wearing a skinny tie.

a skinny tie will always look skinnier though, when placed between wide lapels. the question is: do you want to draw attention to your skinny tie or not ?

I suppose it would look silly between two 1940s extremely wide peak lapels on a db suit.
Between two slim lapels, you have a clean, serious look.
The guy in the film has a slightly quirky contrast going on with medium lapels and slim tie, which works for me (though the jacket appears too big)
There are degrees of contrast.
The more vintage outfits I see, the more I learn.

Blackout (1950)
There are some interesting clothes in this film, even if I don't find them particularly inspiring:
Maxwell Reed (who late became Mr Joan Collins) wears rather broad shouldered suits with a low button stance and deep 'v', that I am not too keen on:
In particular, I don't think this look works well with a waistcoat. I note how the relatively deep 'v' of the waistcoat results in the buttons being closely spaced:
Compare to this actor's outfit which is much more elegant than Reed's:
It's interesting to see the very long, but wide spread, collars on this shirt:
Nice stripes on this suit:

Can't go wrong with an overcoat like this:
(apart from knotting the belt rather than buckling it)
The shirt front is interesting: it appears to have panel at the front of the type associated with formal wear:
His raincoat is rather cheap looking (to my eye at least):
And Patrick Doonan appears to be wearing a cheap British copy of a canadienne:
( I say a cheap copy of a canadienne simply because it appears to thin and lightweight for the real thing).

On the left is Leslie Banks in the hat and prince of wales check suit. He had heavy facial scarring acquired during World War 1. He is talking to Esmond Knight (in windowpane check jacket). Two years after this film was made Esmond Knight was blinded and received facial scarring during World War 2 (he was on HMS Prince of Wales as it pursued the Bismarck - he later recreated some of his experiences in the film Sink The Bismarck)

In my recent posts of stills from Madonna of the Seven Moons I pointed out a darted back (but beltless) jacket worn by Stewart Granger. This jacket worn by Leslie banks appears to have a similar design of rear darts:
I also noted this casual outfit - silk scarf, jumper with a heavily gathered waist at back, spectator shoes:
I always like to point out that the old 'rule' about 'true vintage' suits not having vents is nonsense:
And this cap is nice:

Many of those jackets are very subtle for the 1940s, with medium sized lapels and shoulders. I like them!

thanks for the screen grabs TT. there's a real variety of lapel widths and shoulders on show.
you don't see so many men thrusting the hands in the jacket pockets like this in old British photos.
they usually go for the hand in trouser pocket with jacket flipped up stance.
the same vertical lines appear to be along the shoulder and neck line. while pleated shoulders did exist, the amount in this case would be a bit excessive.
i'm wondering if these lines are just in the pattern and showing up heavily for some reason.
