My wife has a green thumb and does wonders with houseplants and our limited outdoor space. Beekeeping seems interesting and something I'd take up if we had adequate outdoor space.

Ham Radio is a big one for me too (N1TZF). I also took up boxing last year.

I play Bridge, roller skate, ice skate, and watch a b&w tv. I also collect stamps, although I don't have any high-value ones yet.

At one time one of the local community colleges here had a funeral science program. If you wanted to be a mortician that's where you'd go.

A young cousin of mine is currently in college , studying to be a mortician. The irony is that his Grandmother has a reputation in the family for being one who takes a peculiar "delight" in funerals. She will attend funerals of people that she really only has a passing acquaintance with, and regale us with details of the hairstyle of the deceased and what they wore , as if she has just returned from fashion week.

When my cousin announced his chosen career path, the sideways glances between family members was priceless.

I collect coins, in a casual way -- a few Whitman folders I've had since I was in grade school, that sort of thing. And I won't turn up my nose at a game of Monopoly or gin rummy.

Board gaming is making a big comeback these days -- one of the kids from work is very seriously involved in it, and goes to board-game conventions where it's nothing but a room full of people sitting at tables playing various board games.

I wish I could garden, but my soil here is mostly old coal ashes and clinkers with a light layer of weeds growing on top.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread to find out whether anyone here has Golden Era hobbies? I'm thinking of board games like Parcheesi or heirloom gardening or the like.

My girlfriend likes to garden, but since we live in an apartment, her gardening is reduced to caring for the few plants we have in the apartment and being on the building's "gardening committee" which is a fancy name for two people, my girlfriend and one other woman who lives in the building, who manage to take the ridiculously small budget our building allocate to "the garden committee" (add in a bit of their own funds) and make the small patch of dirt in front of our building's entranceway look really nice (the tulips look fantastic right now).

The other hobby we both have is reading, which was a more popular hobby back in the GE because, IMHO, there were less "sit at home" entertainment options than there are today.

My son and I play a myriad of card games at the table each evening. Something that most people I know these days do not do, much less know how to play any card game.

I remember clearing an area in my backyard to plant corn.The hardest part was removing the grass & weeds.
I cleared enough space for two rows of corn.
In no time I had a good crop of corn.
I took a big pot and cooked them like
I remembered my grandmother doing.
I added butter and salt and took a bite.

My mom asked,"What's the matter, aren't you going to finish your corn?"
"It tastes weird...has no flavor!" I told her.
Later I went to the shop where I bought
the corn seeds.
I told the man that the corn had no flavor and didn't taste at all like corn
which my mom bought at the grocery
store.
He said, " that's corn for feeding hogs!"

So much for gardening!

Lately, I've been working on building
a checker board out of wood and
tiles.
The chess pieces will consist of
lead soldiers from the 1930s.
Army for dark and Navy sailors in white uniforms.
There's a guy who makes reproductions
which are just as good as some of my
original Barclays and Manoil lead soldiers.

Bumping another old thread. I'm thinking in this time of social distancing people would take up old hobbies or be inspired to try their hand that all those crafts they've always wanted to do but didn't have the time. Now is the time.

So...has anyone picked up old hobbies or learning something new?

Here is something I am working on. Called a square mat. Doesn't look like it yet but I've got time to get it ship shape.
