Have you tried the wine from Gigondas? Also fairly spendy, but not quite as, and of comparable quality.

I've found most of the '07 southern Rhones to be quite nice. And a lot of the remaining '07's are being reduced in price to make room for the '09's which are showing up now.

Cold and wet here in NC so I reached under my bar and found a mason jar of "Carolina Corn Squeezins" (moonshine) made right near here and given to me by a good friend. Certainly not the smoothest whisky but it will warm you up. Mixed it with lemonade.
