I am sure I once saw a thread that had before pictures of people in the lounge - before vintage that is! Did I imagine it?! I can't find it now... has anyone got any idea what I'm on about? I just fancy perusing it!!

I have George Hurrell's 'Hurrells Hollywood Portaits' book. He was the greatest Hollywood still photographer ever...be he was also a massive retoucher of prints because he hated studio makeup so he spent hours in the darkroom retouching the pics. Photoshopping in it's earliest form Nothing is new.
Check out Joan Crawford's pic aftr six hours of retouching. I was really surprised to know that she had A LOT of freckles. As well as lines and wrinkles; just like the rest of us. She did however have a beautiful face to work with. He's even made her hair shinier.

wow, that's amazing!! so fascinating to see the original! I think it's great being able to see the texture of the skin. What's amazing to me is that the first photo looks like it could have been taken today with b&w film and the second looks totally vintage.
If you have the time and can be bothered, I'd love to see some more photos from that book!

I believe I've read that they worked directly on the negative with the retouching. I've seen some pictures where the retouching is, well, not as great but they just went with it anyway!

I've recently read a biography of her life and she's such a fascinating person. Weirdly I never thought she was that spectacularly pretty in pictures, but when I saw her in different movie clips I was blown away by her!
