BinkieBaumont

Rude Once Too Often
Thanks to LollyLoisides for alerting me to this , piece of 'Art Deco' Real Estate appreciation

Designed in 1930 by legendary Hollywood art director Cedric Gibbons as a love-nest for Gibbons and his then-wife, silent-film siren Dolores del Rio, the Art Deco-style property in Santa Monica features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, an office, a gym, a lighted tennis court, and separate staff/guest quarters. It's listed at $12.45 million.

Thanks for sharing Binkie.

I could never afford anything such as this, but I must confess to feeling a bit uplifted by being able to see it.

I agree and it's not only the exquisite design but the outstanding level of craftsmanship. Makes me proud to be an American.......

Great house! I've been inside several times. I take issue with Roth claiming in the AD article "Over the years, the place had been stripped down." Not so. The house had been maintained in great condition, especially by the recent former owner. The house needed nothing. I was very disappointed with the tennis court viewing room. When I saw it it was, on the interior, sheathed with leather. Now it is white paint. Not what I would call a "restoration".

Depends how old you are, my Mother hates my Art Deco home, it reminds her of the 1930's Germany's WWII-era leader, The depression, Ringworm, Diphtheria, bland tasteless meals, ........ the list goes on, she is always offering to redecorate it for me!!!!!!!!

I'm sure you aren't but you're the only one on the Lounge that would post hate in a thread pertaining to Art Deco. Why don't you go post on the cigar thread that you don't like cigars........

I would not call it hate - but it was unnecessary thread **itting.

Speaking of Dolores del Rio:

I like it because of the light but it's a bit cold; I find more intimate homes to be my taste. Though, if I had the money, I'd buy it in a minute!

Amazing how she can articulate it so well. Nobody over here in America could, or would. We threw out a world of stuff "just 'cause it's old." I guess as leaders of the free world, we didn't need a reason.

I really can't understand that point of view. Germany's WWII-era leader hated Modernism, modern styles, art and architecture. And that included Art Deco. Goebbels had an apartment in Berlin that was Modern. Germany's WWII-era leader hated it too and Goebbels had to redecorate.

There was a strong Modern Movement in Germany, especially with the Bauhaus school in Weimer, but it was closed in 1933 by Germany's WWII-era leader.

It is completely wrong and misguided to equate Art Deco and Modernism with Germany's WWII-era leader.
